Default Turbo guys wanted!!!

hey guys i have a lot of questions for you about my turbo set-up.. first ill let you know what i have an is going to do

04 5.3 only 65,000 miles
KB Racing 72mm front mount.
isky triple 12 cam
3000 stall converter, with 3.42 gears.

i think i got into a hurry on the heads.. i bought 317 for my build thinking it would help out cuz of lower compression blah blah blah.. well this truck is going to be a street truck that sees the track once or twice a year...

well after i bought the heads ive been reading that its a dog out of boost and a dog on spool time!!! i dont know wat to do from here to bump up my compression ratio to get this thing to spool faster and not be a dog on the street... or is there anything i can do to make this thing spool "quick" for the street..

thanks guys

Are the 317's already installed? If not id stay with the 5.3l heads and sell them. If they are already on you can go with the 212+6 and go with a ~3400 or so converter to crutch it. Best setup would be the 5.3 heads with a little bowl work, and a ~ 3200 converter, and the 212+4.

no they arent installed yet.. i just bought them today :/ i jumped the gun..

i guess ill just try to sell/ trade them or something..
also since this is kinda my "build" thread.. im not putting rod bolts in, but i am doing head studs.. will i be walking on thin ice if i dont put rod bolts in? i dont know how much these motors like to spin with boost so to say.. my last truck was N/A 5.3 that spun to 6600 and i never put rod bolts in it and so far its been good..

if you're not planning to go to the track that much, just go with 243s. they will bump up your compression since they out flow the 317s and 862s.
317s will bring compression down which is good for more pounds of boost. but it's up to you.

yeah thats why i bought the 317s but then realized im going to be running a completely stock bottom end.. stock rod bolts and all.. so id be pissing in the wind cuz i wouldnt be able to turn the boost up high enough for the lower compression to even matter. but with that being said, is changing the rod bolts a neccesary thing? my goal horsepower is 500-550 maybe 600.. and i have no clue what these motors like to spin with boost, so idk how long stock rod bolts will hold up spinning it, lets say 6600-6800?

I'm no expert, but I'd say at that level you should be fine. If you crank that boost any higher though I would go ahead and install them.

Rod bolts are a bad idea IMO more harm by distorting rod cap than strength added. Power pk will prob be before 6k with a 72/68mm turbo regardless of cam and heads. You should have 10 sec capible power with the stock 5.3 heads, decent cam, and that turbo with 5800~6k shifts. Head studs, and the ls9 gaskets would be a good idea.

okay thanks for the info stock48! ive heard of people using the ls9 gaskets.. can you get those at a local gm dealer? like crossroads for example? thats the only gm dealer down here where i live.

and what cam would i benefit more from? your custom ground isky triple 12? or a different cam? i reallly like the sound of your cam, as i am coming from a n/a cam only 5.3.. lol
