turbo and catalytic coverters - dumb idea?
#1
I'm gathering parts to build a turbo kit for my truck and though it might sound dumb, I try to be as environmentally friendly as I can without sacrificing performance
Seriously though, I know you want as little backpressure as possible after the turbo but can anyone shed some more light on the subject of turbo setups with catalytic converters? Like I said, I know you want very little if any backpressure after the turbo, and additionally the heat and enriched fuel mixtures will probably make short work of the cats anyways but I just wanted your guys' input on the subject before planning out my exhaust system.

I think you'd be replacing them A LOT. For the rest, put in a cut out for track day -- you probably want that anyway to avoid the back pressure from the tail pipe (you want as little pipe after the turbo as possible for max power).

they sell race cats with a metal matrix core that should stand up. They will cost you noticeable power though, at least they did on mine. I used a pair of 3.5" units, one on each downpipe as far back as possible and still work (about 12" or so, my turbos were under the car) but they didn't remain long. The spool time suffered, but mostly power overall lagged. You can still make power with them on, but it'll never equal an open exhaust.
May not be as drastic with a top mount turbo, but it'll cut power no matter how you look at it.
