do you have any pictures of the inside before you welded it shut?

Aaaaah....there in lies the problem with intercooling. The more you slow down the air, the more it aids in heat transfer. But at the same time you're creating a noticable pressure differential. If you minimize delta P then delta T will of course suffer. Nothing in life, especially in engineering, is free.

No none looks like a core with really large air tanks. It pretty straight forward, just connecting point A to point B with min. amount of tubing.
