Default STS questions... kind of

Im going to go the turbo route. Im debating whether I should go with the STS 67 turbo kit or if I should use my pacesetters and Y pipe, get a piece of pipe and mount a flange for a T4 turbo on that. Ive already got the intercooler and oil pan tapped, so I'll need an oil pump, wastegate, blowoff valve, and controller.
Am I over simplifying this? Is it that easy to mount the turbo to a T4 flange and pipe and hook it to the Y pipe? I made the FMIC for the vortech so making piping doesnt bother me at all.
What turbo should I be looking at and what do they run? This will be on a stock displacement 6.0, cam, stage 1 heads, meth, etc. Id like to see at least 650 rwhp with the ability to get near 750 without the turbo running out of breath if that is feasable without a huge stall.
Im a turbo newbie!

Cool

If you look at some pics of the STS system it should be easy enough to weld on a T4 flange and mount the turbo. I think you may find the GT67 a little small for what you want but it should spool well. Maybe someone else can help you out a little more on that one. I am still running the 60-1 and it seems to be pretty much maxed out at 10 psi. The STS uses a hobbs switch to warn when the return pump is not sending the oil back fast enough or if it fails. It sets off an alarm if pressure builds up before the pump. The STS system also uses another hobbs switch at the intake to turn on the PCV Bypass valve to vent to the atmosphere when it senses boost over 1 psi (I think it is 1 PSI both the hobbs switches are adjustable). This switch also puts the oil return pump into high speed mode under boost. You might be able to get away without a BOV on an automatic. The only time they operate is when you totally lift off the accelerator but are more necessary if you are running over 12 psi boost.

I think that you basically have it and just need to work out a few of the details. You will also need some fuel system upgrades which you may already have like 60 lb injectors. You will also have the MAF maxed out so tuning and fuel issues must be addressed. Some forged internals are probably also in order. You will also have the normal driveline and traction issues to address.

Well nothing worth while is ever as easy as all that.

Good luck

Here's what I was talking about. Sorry for the crappy paint drawing, but I don't want to post anything from the CAD programs I'm not supposed to have here at home.

All this would go on next to the tranny. It would be tight, but doable IMO.

Any turbo shop will carry T4 flanges in both S/S and mild. It can easily be welded to your pipe. I'm going this route as soon as I feel comfortable with everything the way it is. I plan on doing some scientific testing while slowly moving the turbo toward the front of the truck.

Thanks guys. I scrapped the idea of doing it myself since I put a deposit on an almost new STS GT67 kit from another member. Im going to see what the GT67 will do on a stock 6.0 with rod bolts while my motor is being built. I hope to figure out a transmission solution (FLP Level 5 or 4L80) and get rear end stuff done (3.42 or lower if I can find them, TA girdle, and auburn or eaton). Then I'll see how big I can go. I remember someone saying that the GT70 was the largest you could bo on this kit. Im hoping that with heads, meth, intercooler, and turbo cam, I could get near the 650rwhp mark. We'll see.

I am not sure if the pacesetters will help much with the turbo.

The rwhp level you want will need a built motor. You may make it on a stock lower end, but not for long!!

Im going with a 370 like quicksilverado had. It will be a while before I decide on one, so Im going to swap in a 6.0 for now and get the transmission and rear taken care of. The 370 will hopefully have a GT70 and a higher stall converter.
