Default Problems with wastegate

I havent gotten my truck tuned at WOT yet due to a seal bad in turbo and letting oil out of the downpipe but when i drove it the other day i can lean into it to make boost and i have seen the gauge hit 14#s before. I have a x02 50mm Wastegate and its in the drivers side exhaust pipe. I have two springs for it and i am currently using the softer one. My common sense would tell me that its the 8 lb spring. The wastegate is fully adjustable but the adjuster is all the way out. I want to know what people think about this situation and how to resolve it. Im thinking about taking the spring out and cutting a few links off of it and putting it back in. I can always up it by adjusting it.

There's your problem.

I really hope that you didn't make that mistake though...

You've got some boost creep... When you install a wastegate, orientation does matter. Once a wastegate opens, the exhaust flow will take the path of least resistance, regardless if it is out the wastegate or through the turbo. A lot of times if your wastegate isn't big enough and its placed perpendicular to exhaust flow, the path of least resistance will still be through the turbo. After all, it takes energy to change the direction of something in motion, exhaust included. It seems in your case that it would take too much energy to bleed off ALL the extra exhaust, so its still going through the turbo. You either need a bigger wastegate, or you need to reposition it so that it is in-line with the main flow of exhaust to that its easier for exhaust to exit the wastegate when it opens.

Yeah that makes sense and i thought of that but i dont wanna move it now that its installed. lol And a 50mm should be big enough. Im just gonna take the spring out and cut it i guess. If it dont make enough boost i can adjust the wastegate to make more.

Cutting a spring changes the spring rate, so that idea may backfire on you...

I think i figured it out and you will call my a dummy but oh well. The wastegate has two ports on it. one on top and one on bottom. When i got it, it had a nipple already on the top so i assumed that was the right port. After talking to a few people they said it should be hooked up to the bottom. Well, i have the turbo off at the moment waiting on a rebuild kit but i will let you know if that fixed it.

Lol, that'll do it. Let us know how it works when you get it reinstalled.

It will also over boost if you have the wastegate bolted on backwards so that piston has to work against the boost when it pulls down to relieve pressure. I know that from experience so you're not alone... I'm a dummy too lol.
