How do you know when a turbo is going south?
I have been hearing a metal whine like a merry-go-round when it is slowing down and I am thinking that my turbo may be going south.

Is this noise heard under load or after revving while parked?
Mine is noticeable if I rev it in park, you can hear in wind down to the floe of the exhaust in idle.
Is it a consisitent sound or does it vary when you hear it, like the freezing up of and rolling of bearings?

Do a quick check on it. Pull the air filter off of it and grab the shaft and make sure it spins freely. Check the play in it, it should have some play side to side, but no end play. Make sure the turbine wheels aren't rubbing the housing at anytime. That will tell you a lot.

I can hear it with the windows up more because other noises do not distract. It does it when I am close to zero vacuum(no boost) then let off of the gas. I can hear the turbo slowing down then all of a sudden it starts to whine like metal on metal.
