I used a NVG246 out of a factory equipped 80E truck when I did my 80E swap. Looks identical to my original NVG 246, but the HD t-case got a 6 pinion planetary set vs 3 or 4(depends on model year) in the 60E trucks.

I've had no problems with the t-case. Mind you I usually stay in 2 WD due to the weak front driveline. Transmissions are another story though.

I heard the 60E t-cases had 3 or 4 planetary sets as well. When sharpshooter and I did the input shaft swap on our t-cases, they both had 6.

Are yours' the NVG246 with the 4 button switch? I'm going by the GM info for the 246 up to 2005. Don't know what they did after that.

"There are two versions of the NVG 246 EAU, which depend on the transmission applications and vehicle applications. If the vehicle is equipped with a transmission RPO M30, the transmission splines in the input gear will have 27 teeth. With this application the planetary carrier assembly will have 3 pinion gears. If the vehicle is equipped with transmission RPO MT1 or MN8, the transmission splines in the input gear will have 32 teeth. The planetary carrier assembly on this application will have 6 pinion gears. "

The converter was awesome, it would flash to about 3000, but was still efficient up top. It's a single disc.

mine is a 2006. i just checked under the truck and the tag says 246 a man# and ser# cant fine either code you mentioned. how would i know what m-code i got? where do i look? i also have the 4 button switch however i know that my 2006 was the last year body style and they switched in 2007 thus my cpu is'nt like a 2005, or a 2007 its kinda split verision of both so i ran into some tunning issues thats how we found out. so i might have a m-code for a 2005 or a 2007. glad you brought it up. so how do i find out?

I wouldnt worry about the transfer case. Itll take a lot to break it. Worry more about the output shaft on the transmission.
