Detonation problem

I noticed you had a hard start problem also. I just had the same problem when I put my tvs on couple weeks ago. I missed the small seal behind the fuel pressure regulator when I swapped it over. Would bleed fuel pressure down and was hard to start. Also fuel pressure was dropping to 30 psi under load. Could be cause of the pinging.

DrX, my torque converter unlocks at the slightest additional pedal in 4th gear from a steady state condition. I'm usually plodding along at about 1500 rpms in the traffic when I accelerate and it unlocks and jumps to at least 1800 rpms. I can concentrate on very gradual acceleration and stay under where the detobnation starts, but that's usually a bit slower than I want to get moving. I can also give it enough pedal to get past where the detonation is, but then I'll be blowing by everyone and attracting too much unwanted attention. The detonation is right in the normal acceleration range for daily driving.
BlownChevy, I plan to check fuel pressure, as Drew suggested also, but logic would dictate that if there is enough fuel pressure for it to pull strongly at WOT fully through the gears and with no detonation, there certainly should be adequate pressure for partial throttle. I'm not being hard on Drew and I know he probably has a lot to deal with, but this is frustrating and I'm very concerned about piston damage. I have asked Drew numerous times for information on my tune so that I can help with the diagnosis, but I get few responses. I've been working at solving this for over a month. I know it's a tough problem to diagnose long distance, but Silverado11 had the same problem under the same conditions on the same engine, so maybe Drew needs to pay a bit more attention to this. I have done no additonal mods other than the cat backs and have kept everything just as Magnacharger recommends for this application. I even removed my CAI and reinstalled the factory air cleaner box and used thier supplied K&N filter.
ScreaminChevy, thanks for that tip. I was very careful about the seals when installing the pressure regulator in the new fuel rail block, but it's certainly worth a check if that caused you similar problems.

You really do need to get a fuel pressure guage on it ASAP. Usually a "canned " tune from any tuner is going to be rich in PE (Power Enrichment) to be on the safe side. Your FP might just be on the low side, and with normal driving be lean enough to cause pinging, but when going into PE, the tune might be rich enough to keep it out of detonation. I would bet, if you had an Air Fuel ratio gauge on it, too, you might see it being a little lean up top, too. Just some extra thoughts/ideas. These types of problems can be frustrating trying to diagnose from a long distance.

when my tuck had the same pinging under light throttle conditions, it only had the maggie on, then i did headers, a cold air, 160t stat, cat back, TR6 plugs, she still pinged!!! finally brought it in for the tune, (witch was recommended by all the guys i talked to on pt.net.) Hooked a fuel pressure gauge, boost gauge, and air fuel gauge during the tune and learned so much. thats what i recommend you do. i cant even discribe how much better my truck feels after the tune.

Silverado11, I'm in full agreement with you. I bought this truck new and know it well. I had some minor mods and a custom tune before the maggie install and it ran beautifully under all conditions. I have had this detonation problem only since installing the Magnacharger. I don't think it's the result of any component problems, which would be highly coincidental. I have recently talked with my original tuner who has worked with Magnacharger on thier tuning and he also agress that it just needs refining.
While I agree that long distance troubleshooting is difficult, I have asked many questions about my tune to Magnacharger and have received no responses. The more I know about it the better I can help. I have been waiting over a week for a promised update and have not recieved it yet. Hard to make any progress with that kind of support. I'm no newbie at rodding. I've been building small block Chevy engines for 45 years and have encountered many problems. I'll get this one resolved also. And thanks to all for your responses.

Well, I'm happy to report that my detonation problem has been resolved. After two unsuccesful tuning updates by Magnacharger, I contacted the tuner that did my original tune before the supercharger install. He had me send him my PCM and he loaded a proven tune for my engine with the Magnacharger. After running for two weeks now in unseasonably hot temps (90+), I have had no detonation under any throttle and speed conditions. It's running like it should and really fine. Silverado11 was righton...I had no mechanical problems...just improper tuning.
