Default bov location wastegate merge

whats the difference between mounting on hot or cold side of IC ?


also im gettin ready to build my merge pipe, and trying to determine ideal location for the WG, would it be ok to put it on 1 side of the "y" merge? or better to "centralize" it between the two? and what about distance from the t4 flange? is there a "too close" location? sorry for noobie Q's

BOV usually goes on the engine side of the IC. Not sure if it makes a huge difference though.

yeah thats where i have plan to put it.. just have seen a couple builds with guys running it on the hot side.. and didnt know reasoning behind it or which is better..

Depends some what on application but the general logic is closer the throttle body the better. In the 4 banger world (DSM's) cars had issues breaking throttle bodies if the Bov is to small or to far away from the tb. The fix was Bov placement and problem solved.

centralize the WG and mount it so the exhaust has a direct shot into it, if possible.

The idea behind the BOV is to release pressure to put less strain on the turbo shaft. When the TB blade closes the air is moving very fast, and it will build pressure very quickly. If that pressure pushes back through to the turbo without bleeding off it makes the turbo slow down rapidly almost as if it wants to turn backwards as there is no exhaust pressure to hold it. Well when your turbo is turning at 100k RPM's that puts a huge amount of stress on it. If the BOV was at the turbo, the whole pressure side would have a chance to build up before the BOV would have a chance to release it. Long story short, it makes a greater chance for the turbo to get damaged. At least that is how it was explained to me.

Wastegate should have some priority in the system and ideally as close to the turbo as possible. On these trucks it is 300 times easier to plumb it from the crossover and join it back into the down pipe 2 ft after the turbine flange so it is the way you will see it done in most cases. To route a separate pipe from the turbo area back down and have it enter the downpipe away from the turbo was a pain in the *** and I don't think it was worth all the trouble.
