Default Anyone done a build with a vortec 7.4

Been wondering around reading for quite a while now on the ls1tech forum associated with this site and am slowly putting together all the parts. A am wondering if anyone else has done a FI build with these motors past the stock application kits like the whipple or the p1sc procharger.

Im starting out looking for 700rwhp with room to grow. My base will be a 468 forged internals. prolly the stock heads for now but they already have port work on the intake side, bowl work and a five angle valve job done from before. Just purchased an edelbrock pro flow xt manifold and will be running an F1 or a D1 what ever i can find cheaper.

Im wondering if anyone has done a build with one of these motor yet or if i am still out there in no mans land on if the block will hold up to hi HP applications

Good luck!

My good old 98 3500 is waiting for a motor build and a blower of some kind.

Not many people have done much on the net that I can find with the 454...

Keep us updated!

I knew I was prolly out in no mans land with this build but I'm glad to see I'm not alone with wanting to try it! Right now the truck has some work done to the motor, a stall converter and the 411 PCM swap. Idk if you have done anything to yours yet but if you have any question let me know I've got some experience with the motor and am reading every day learning I'd be glad to help if I can.

I went the easier way and just threw a bottle on the 502 in my obs tahoe, I had a P1SC and a F1 procharger sitting in the garage at the time and it was going to be a really tight fit trying to adapt the sbc brackets from the 350 and 400 that were in it before the 502.

I'll tell ya that 502 was no slouch on its own with a 2500 stall and 4.10's behind it.

500+ ft lbs between 2000-5000, the bottle was fun for picking on mustangs.

at 5700 lbs (yeah I put alot of weight into that 2wd 4dr tahoe) it would run 14 flat at 95 all day long pick up a second and 10 mph with the 200 shot.

I hope you have a 4L80 behind whatever BBC you put in your truck.....the 502 destroyed a built 4L60 with a 2800 stall and all the hard parts the first time I hammered it at 30 mph and it downshifted.

without the bottle.

as for F1 vs D1........the F1 has a 5.0 gear ratio vs the 4.1 of the D1 it will spool quicker, but also put a greater load on your belt, don't waste your time with a 6 rib.......I snapped countless 6 ribs. The D1 should be okay with the 6 rib, but you have alot of cubes to fill.......so you'll probably want the bigger blower. with 9.5 compression you should be good around 8-9 lbs intercooled.

I did the ramjet before the 411 was an option..something nice to be said about connecting power ground fuel and turning the key......it was ready to roll, add the wet shot and its pretty damn simple...I had DFI but couldn't get it tuned right when I had a 400 sbc with 15 pounds on it...I think my 502 has 38 lb injectors but you'll want bigger with boost...

the motor im building is gonna be all forged so ill be running more boost then that probably around 12 to start with 9:1 compression on 93 with a good intercooler set up and a built 4l80 after i blow my stock one (most likely the first time i drive it lol) especially at 6000lbs.

Here's a vid of my truck right now. Stock lower end with some head work and a very mild cam, TCI whole shot stall (set to lock at 2100 at 6800 lbs though because thats what my weight class is when i pull) and the 411 swap.
