I think it opens up the passage of air through the bends in the tube as well as at the end of the tube itself. I understand how the smallest point is the choke point but I think anything you can do to make it easier for air to reach the choke point is an improvement. Somewhat opposite of the thinking for exhaust to a certain extent.
