Default 2017 Sierra 5.3L Turbo

Hey how’s it going everyone. I have a few questions regarding Turbo Kits. I’ve looked into Trick Turbo and Huron Speed(14-18 turbo kit available soon)
I drive a 2017 GMC Sierra crew cab short box 5.3L with 6L80, stock everything. 3.42 rear end along with 275/55R20 A/T tires.
What turbo size are most going with to achieve the 500- 550whrp range? I would like to have more boost in the low end of things rather then top end. Is this doable?
I am an avid hunter and I live in Saskatchewan, Canada so needless to say, there is lots of snow. How will a turbo affect winter driving conditions ?? I should note that we have a temperature range from -50’C to +40’C will this cause issues with the hot side?? Also I drive about 10-15% on gravel. Will this be an issue with turbo system? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas

A 70mm turbo will make that power without a problem. Even a smaller turbo would make that power on these newer engines. At a guess it would probably take 10psi or less to make around 500hp. That size turbo is going to spool up quick and give you the power you want.

You just need to make sure your fuel system can support that power. Consider LT4 injectors because the stock ones probably won't get you there.

The turbo shouldn't change anything for winter driving, if it's calibrated correctly it would function like normal. Same with dirt roads, that means nothing. You're going to be running an air filter, so that's all you need to worry about.

Okay thanks for your input man. I’ve heard that the stock injectors are 60# is that correct? If I went up to like an 80# would that cause a increase in fuel consumption?? Or is that all the time that controls that?

I just didn’t know if the FI would damage anything with lots of gravel dust on the occasion. I’ve also been seeing lost people figure it’s in the best interest to add a trans cooler and oil cooler? Staying away from electric fans is there enough room in my grill to get those plus a Intercooler tucked in?? Seems like a lot!!

I honestly don't know the flow rate of these DI injectors. They are nothing like the old injectors where we rate them all by lb/hr's.

Because the DI engines have a mechanical fuel pump driven by the camshaft. I just kinda know where the edge of the injector limit is when using HP Tuners. Right around 5.5ms on the injector pulse is pushing the limits. That is why people upgrade to the LT4 injectors that come on the factory supercharged DI engines. You gain headroom on the injector flow limit.

For a crude example, I converted by 2016 to run on E85. It's basically stock with cat-back/intake and when I run E70 fuel, I am already pushing limits of the injectors because of the alcohol content. Running regular pump gas gives me back about 20-30% room because it doesn't require as much fuel as ethanol does.

The tune would be corrected for the different injectors because the injector data can be found on different calibrations and plugged in. Then the rest is having the airflow/fueling/torque model calibrated for the injectors/turbo upgrade.

Whoever does the tuning needs to be well educated with these computers is all I'm saying.

Your other options are a supercharger kit that is bolt on and go because they normally come with a canned tune that works with the kit.

I know the extra power will be fine goin through fields of snow but what I’m wondering is will the turbo be constantly wanting to spool out and make me spinout like crazy haha.
One of the other things I was wanting to know if I’m applying that much boost is it a good idea to go in and do the DOD & AFM delete ?? I have a 5 Star Tubing remote tune in my truck for the last 40,000miles which has cancelled both afm and dod. Has anyone had issues with that?
Up here in sask there aren’t many Gas performance shops
( mostly diesel) willing to do turbo tunes besides Performance Plus. I have one an hour away from me and they are a big franchise up here so that may be my best bet.
I have looked into lots of super chargers and Procharger a aswell I just don’t wanna be destroying my fuel mileage and I’d rather not here the constant whine of the supercharger haha

It won't give boost unless you open the throttle too much. You are totally in control of the go pedal.

It is possible to limit the throttle based on engine torque production. Most people max out these values to remove them from the equation, but if you have someone who knows what they're doing, they can be used to prevent extra torque when you don't want it.

I ran my trick turbo kit through many winters and its rocking around somewhere up here in Buffalo. The 70/65 that comes standard might start choking out going for 500+ wheel. I never made that much with mine. I upgraded to Tricks Billet 76/75 and noticed zero lag and it made 600+ wheel at a higher boost. The turbo itself was a direct swap, I didn't have to change anything. It is just a bit bigger frame but fits great still. The 70/65 was stupid loud which I loved compared to the billet 76.

I have some youtube videos of comparing the spool between the 70 and 76 and one of doing 4x4 donuts in the snow making turbo noises.
