Do you have to change any thing or the tune or can you just install the converter and go

Instal the converter and take it to the guy that tuned it before. He will set it up in the tune. I dont know your tuner but a live tune on a dyno usually gets better results than mail order.

Nice HP number but the torque is seriously hurting. A long rod, short stroke engine is good for one thing and one thing only, making top-end HP so you should embrace that. I would have gone with an even larger cam, a 6,500-6,800 rpm revlimit and a 3,600+ stall with 4.56 gears if performance is the main goal. If you want something quick without the stall and gears you need an engine design capable of more low-end torque.

My VK 5.6 in my crew cab Titan is a great example of this. I just hit 13.9s on street tires, with minimal bolt ons, with the stock torque converter, stock 3.36 geared open differential and stock goodyear 20s. There is something to be said about making torque early in the powerband.

If you are going to spray it I wouldn't go much over 2,800-3,000 rpm on the converter. A 100 HP shot of nitrous increases cylinder pressure in such a way that it boost the torque curve drastically at low rpm, but the torque flattens out at high rpm. Some of the quickest nitrous cars I have seen use very low stall speeds for the cams they have in them.

For my brothers 1980 Corvette, I put togather a little 310, .030" over 4-bolt main 305 with forged pistons, gm "X" rods, stock steel crank, a GM 845 cam, retrofit roller lifters, ported 059 vortec heads, edelbrock victor jr intake, 680 cfm Holley, stock exhaust manifolds and a single 3" exhaust system that splits at the rear with a single straight through muffler under the car. With a powerglide 2spd behind it and 3.07 gears in the rear end, it has run 9.40s in the 1/8 on street tires with a torqueless launch. Haven't taken it back to the track since we worked up to a 150 shot, but my Gtech that was spot on prior to the nitrous install at the track, says it runs 8.60s on street tires spraying from 3,000 rpm in 1st gear ~40 mph. NITROUS IS ADDICTING!! I am wanting to install a full on progressive setup on my Titan with a 100 hp hit. I'll get a video sometime of it on the juice, but we have to rebuild the rear calipers and put new tires on the back before that happens.

Why make a 305 a four bolt main? They didn't come factory like that.

If I was going to spend money to put splayed caps on anything, it would be an aftermarket block with a 4.125" bore.

This little 305 was 4-bolt main, steel crank, X rods, and flattop pistons from the factory, not very common but they built them. The block was the original numbers matching block from my G20 van and had Canada cast into the back of it. It came from the factory with the 53cc 14022601 heads with 1.84/1.50 valves, "274" 350 cam, aluminum intake, 795 CFM Q-Jet, and factory stainless steel tubular manifolds and catless duals. I had several friends when I was in school that messed with that little 305 in the big old rolling brick when TBI 350 trucks were commonly driven by teenagers. I never lost a race to a TBI 350 truck in it.
