Default dodge ram tranny shot

my dads 1999 (i think) ram **** its transmission last week at 100,000 miles. he took it to a shop and they told him it would be $4700 to replace it. that seems way high to me. if i can find a replacement i will buy it and change it myself to save him all of that money. what transmission do i need to find though? it has the 5.9 and its 4wd (auto). thanks

That sounds pricey, I had the 545rfe go in my 03 ram and that was a $3300 bill to rebuild. I would imagine the older tranny would be a little cheaper then that.

My 2006 dodge 3500 4wd diesel dually crapped it's transmission recently. I've been looking at an ATS built trans for around 4,500.00 check out atsdieselperformance.com. the older model may be cheaper I'm not sure.
