Default Drag radials or not??

Just wanted to get some opinions from all of you..

I am wondering what will be the benefit of me going to a drag radial vs. a street tire given that I get a street tire in the same height as I would a D/R (26")??

At the track, I do not spin on the 20s that have new tires. So what I am thinking is that the biggest benefit of me going to a shorter tire is the gearing change.

Am I wrong in my reasoning? Has anyone tried a shorter street tire with good results? I'd be running a 275/45/17 tire.

Thanks!

You wont get near as much wear out of the DR's as the street treads. Since you are not spinning the 20's I wouldn't wast the money.

To see if I understand this right... You have 20's and are buying tires for the track in a 17"??? If you are doing a set of tires just for the track I'd say go for a drag radial. There are nights when it is cold out and track prep is terrible that can make a street tire that is normally great not hook. I'm certainly all for a street tire, but if you're buying tires pretty much for track use you might as well buy a more track oriented type tire. Something like the M&H 275/50R17 would be about the same size and work well even as you modifiy. Without alot of power you probably wouldn't even need to heat them or do much more than scuff them which will give you plenty of tread life.

If you're just getting them for track use, get the DR. When you switch from your heavy 20, to a smaller diameter and lighter 17, your truck will be quite a bit quicker off the line, and also alot more likely to spin the tires. Give yourself the advantage of the DR.

If you're getting a tire just for the track get a full slick.

Yeah get slicks because nothing says cool like slicks on a 15 second truck. Get the dr's you won't be dissapointed. Buy those 275/40's mentioned above
