I think it could be done with the right controller but a turbo would be my approach. A KB kit with a precision 76/75 billet right cam, trans and verter you would be there and it would prob be much easier on parts. Might even do it with a Tc76 I went low 10's in my 4x4 at 4875lbs with a restrictive tc76. That turbo will breath better on the 5.3L.

I'm 100% convinced you could run 9's with a forged 5.3 and a D1sc at 4200-4300 lbs.
Granted my 5.3 was bored to a 5.7, it had a very mild cam, factory 706 heads and weighed 4550 when it when 10.40 with a D1sc on stock brackets and an 8-rib setup.
Will someone ever attempt it with a procharger, probably not.
It would look something like this in my mind:
A cam in the 230/240 range
Big heads, like in the 245cc range with flow around 350/270 int/ex at a minimum
Ported Vic Jr. could get it done with a 90mm tb and an elbow
Big fuel system on C16 or Methanol
2" Kooks with a dual 3" exhaust
D1sc with an 8-rib set up minimum driven at a minimum 105%+
1500 hp air to water
A converter that would go about 4500
Obviously a 4l80 or t400
Geared properly
and a suspension that worked
all this plus a weight less than 4400 lbs and it would probably run well into the 9's.

truck going to the shop friday i think to start geting rolling cant wait.....oh and no Pro Charger, will probly run c16 on a cell for the stand alone fuel system for the n2o
