10's seem to be elusive for an ECSB. 9's are that much more impressive.

Junkyard driveshaft, balance it, fresh sealed U joints, and roll with it. Trans might be ok if the front section is still together. Looks to me the U joint was the issue, not the shaft.

Dead on...stock steel shaft, both piece are intact. Center u-joint simply let go.

I'm about to go get under it to check things out and see what the clanking noise was with the trans in drive.

It is amazing how elusive 9 second passes can be... if you just read the internet you would think all you need to do is upgrade the fuel pump, file the rings, and throw a turbo on and you are running 9s on the first hit!
Sorry, it's 2wd. And I'm referring to the front shaft of the 2 piece driveshaft.

The 60' isn't actually where the U joint let go. It was more like 100-150' feet out. Was literally like an explosion in the cab, thought my rear end exploded.

Interesting tidbit looking at my logs. I didn't actually hit 100% TPS till almost 5900 rpm in 1st gear. Most of 1st gear is spent around 65%. With the 4.10 gears 1st gear is gone so fast (shift @ 41 mph) by the time I realized I hooked up, I'm already in 2nd. Really begs the question whether I need to just man up and put a 9" or 14 bolt under this thing right now and be done with it. At this rate, I could fix the driveshaft, and next thing I know the 10 bolt may explode.

I wouldn't bother with changing things until you've got an issue with it. You'd be adding a lot of unsprung weight to the rear by swapping. So are you thinking about changing the shaft set of are you considering repairing yours? Those stock 2 piece steel shafts are hell for stout just like they come from the factory. With good U joints I'd be willing to bet you'd be fine. If you had a set built all they'd do is basically build you the same thing with 1350 yokes and joints. You could get fancy and put a CV at the center joint but you're not dealing with crazy angles. Stock stuff would do you just fine for this.

I remember looking at the rule book way back and all they stated then was a safety loop a certain distance from the front U joint, made from a specified material. Nothing specifying anything different for multiple section drive shafts. Mine was only on the front of the front shaft, to be legal.

Don't know why or what for but that's what they said a few years back when I was doing it.

-so trucks with a 2 piece drive shaft need 4 loops?

Yea, so the 60ft time should give a good indication of what the pass would have looked like had you not exploded. Im interested to see what your 60ft was after you made some changes.
