One of my coworkers is selling a 97 jeep. Its been sitting for about two years and has a dead battery. What other things should I look for? Hes only asking $500. Its 2wd, 4.0L I6. Would make a great DD.

autozone sales the head gasket "kit" for about $80, do you think it would be worth just switching it out since it has been sitting for two years? Im going to look at it Saterday morning.
Also, its a Grand Cherokee.

Do a compression check. Check the oil and trans fluid. If you just buy it just to fix and use, change all the fluids, then run it. Then change the fluids again. The old 258 I6 Jeep engine was damn near as indestructible as the Mopar slant 6.

Well I got the Jeep. Bought a new battery and it started right up, but had a crazy exhaust leak. Turns out that one of the tubes right before the primary was split all the way through. Replaced it with the new redesigned manifold. Changed the spark plugs, wires, Oil, oil/air filters, and flushed the brake system. Passed emissions and registered. Getting about 16.4 MPG on regular gas. Insurance is only 15 a month. So with the amount I drive, the Jeep will pay for itself in about a year with the savings.

And the hood does close all of the way. I just have it popped open

In 99 Jeep redesigned the intake manifold due to emmisions. The redesigned intake allowes for better flow, resulting in about a 15 hp increase. Here is my write up of the install.
Started with this

replaced it with this

spent 3 days soaking/cleaning/painting it

installed

how i routed some of the hoses. The hose that crosses in front of the tb broke last week when I did the injector swap. Used some 5/16 rubber hose to reconnect it.

all done.

total time... 2.5 hours. would have been faster if I did it during the day but its around 110 here now so I'll do my modding at night if I can.
Driving impressions: It doesnt studder when accelerating. Befor I would have to put the gear selector in 1st to do a burnout, now it will roast em in drive. And I went from 16 mpg to 17.6 with the new manifold and EV6 injectors I'm getting 17.5 all city.
