Default 2002 Ram with 5.9, looking for better MPG

One of the guys I work with has a 2002 Ram with the 5.9 in it. He is looking for better gas mileage. Before he spends any of his money, he wants to know what options he has ans what kind of results he can expect. Thanks!!

You ask a really loaded question... I doubt that anyone is going to want to list all of the gas mileage 101 here.. In short he is going to spend a lot of cash and get less than spectacular results.. it is a heavy truck with an engine not really known for mileage.... weight reduction where ever possible, less restriction in the exhaust and a true cold air intake may help performance and gas mileage... dump the 20's if the put those on, get rid of the 3.92's for 3.55's or higher if he has those...
I don't have a lot of info on his truck to go on.... but you can see a lot of cash for maybe 2 to 3 mpg and you have to really drive it like a granny... on good push on the go pedal and the mileage goes to pot.. good luck.

It's all stock. Yes it has the factory 20's. So it looks like a pig will stay a pig.

Those 20's really look nice but at 82 lbs per corner, I dropped about 7 tenths and picked up 2 mpg but using some older 17's that came off of my 99 Ram Sport.. which were 55 lbs per corner.. I never can realize the increase in milage cause I can't keep my foot out of it..

good luck I had the same idea in mind when I put an intake, headers, hi-flow cats and a flowmaster............It only increased about .5-1 mpg.........but that was on a 3/4 ton.........good luck.

Yeah the 5.9 is know to be a fuel disaster maker, tell him to trade up to a hemi...........100 more HP and about 5-6 MPG more in fuel economy.
