My dad is buying a new Ram cummins 2500 and has me doing all the research on it so I can buy his durango from him for cheap as a daily driver... (good deal for me but anywho I can't find anywhere the MPG's it gets??? not on their website or others.... any help??

oh and he will only be pulling about a medium sized boat that shouldn't be a problem at all for a Cummins and is really concerned on gas mileage with diesel being more expensive that gas now.... so I know you can tune diesels to make **** tons of power but can you tune them to get better MPG without sacrificing power?? thanks!!

 

I even stopped by a dealership today and the EPA estimated MPG was blank!!

 

The get good Fuel Milage and he will love the cummins !

On a bad day of plowing with a 650# plow on the nose and 2000# of sand in the bed, my '02 Cummins H.O. 6 speed gets 14 mpg. Consider that my route of 52 driveways is a totaol of 119 miles total and most of those are back and forth in the same driveways a couple times, thats not bad. Empty on the highway I have gotten as much as 21 mpg and towing a dolley with a VW Rabbit to Ohio I averaged 18.4 round trip. BTY, I have a very heavy right foot and the new CRD's get better mileage than my 24v VP44. GO GET THAT TRUCK!!! Chris

 

If all he is needing to pull is a boat then I dont know if I could justify the 5000k+ for the cummins option. Add that with the expense of diesel and it will be costly. The gas mileage on my 05 is 19mpg city/highway combined and thats with 33k miles. Gas mileage gets better the more miles you have on a diesel. I have seen reports of brand new 07 6.7s with around 15-16mpg to start. Still better than a hemi.

 

well we get green sheet on all diamler chrysler stuff so the cummins option isn't 5000k for us and I think he just wants a truck that he can put 200k on the clock and still run... the 5.9 is still a proven diesel and he might get that instead, don't know yet

 

The new 6.7 cummins is a little bit stronger then the old 5.9 was. As for the gas mileage i can't say we have not had one come in to the shop i work at execpt for a oil change.

 

I would expect to get between 17-22 with the new motor as it breaks in it will get better all the time. But being as it is teh 1st year for the 6.7 I might wait a year to let them work out the kinks or I would buy a 5.9 used one...

 

Just make your own bio-diesel or run WVO.

You can make bio-diesel around 75 cents a gallon! That's not including the cost of the tanks and such. But they sell kits to make your own.

Worth looking into if you own a diesel!

 

Hmmmm......6.7 is a little stronger? Same motor, just a slightly bigger bore and stroke (4.00x4.70 compared to the 4.21x4.88) and a bunch of Emissions crap is the difference.

Anyways. The Cummins is IT when it comes to Diesel's. You can expect 14-18 in town/city/hauling your boat all around average.

As for justifying the cost of the Diesel? Simple....RESALE value!!!!!! LONGEVITY!!!!! BIO-DIESEL!!!!!! PULLING POWER!!!!!!

My truck in my sig gets:

16 MPG around town.
18-20 MPG depending on how fast I drive on the highway.
15 MPG hauling a friends car to the local race track on the weekend's
9 MPG hauling 44' enclosed trailer, race car, welding machine, generator, engine hoist, tools, etc....about 27K LBS
16-17 MPG hauling a 18' car hauler, and a 1971 Dodge Challenger from Oregon to Texas @ 65-67 MPH.

Those are REAL figures, figured by hand, not the overhead. I have averaged EVERY tank of fuel since I have owned the truck, and have put over 40K on the truck in a little over a year. I change the fuel filter every other oil change, and I run a fuel additive to every 2-3 tanks of fuel.

Get the 3.73 gear, do NOT get the 4.10's unless you plan on hauling 25k+ all the time (which from what you said, you are not).

Good luck. And once you get the CTD,you will wonder why you did not do it before.
