Default Free to me GMC k2500

Alright girls I missed y’all, explored another forum and it’s just not the same. I still have the Tahoe, still have the RCSB, although it’s been cut up and needs to be scrapped/sold.

So here we go on this build. Two years after I was born (1996) my uncle custom ordered this 1996K2500 ECSB 4x4 GMC with a Vortec 5.7, 4L80 (omg I know it’s an auto so lame that I can’t clutch dump it. Will have to neutral bomb it” , and 4.10s. It was his pride and joy that I spent many hours in the back of going on fishing trips. Fast forward to 2018-2019 and he drove it into a palm tree in his driveway due to severely declining health. Somehow it got backed into his three car garage and his health go so bad he pretty much never got to leave the house on his own again. Fast forward to Feb2024 and he finally passed onto whatever is next. A few weeks later his wife decided she wanted her garage back and offered me the truck since I’m the only idiot in the family that would be able to haul it off and do something with it. She really didn’t want it to get scrapped.

So I’m the proud owner of a 144k mile GMC k2500 that needs some help. I plan to keep this very very stock, the vortec 350 is a good power plant, and backed by a 4l80, sending power to 8 lug running gear it should tow a trailer well and be very reliable and cheap to maintain. Will allow me to stop towing with the Tahoe and finally tear it down for some much needed love and racetruck mods like the Maggie that’s been on my shelf for 5 years.

So far this is what I’ve done to the gmc.

-Frame repair (Helen Keller came over and migged it up with her feet)
-New/used core support
-New radiator
-New AC components
-New oil cooler lines
-Resealed oil cooler adapter
-New trans cooler lines
-New battery
-New body mounts
-Resealed rear diff and added nice diff cover I had laying around
-Wheel spacers 1.5”front/3”rear (fitment front to rear is perfect)
-2007 Power wagon forged factory wheels with left over 255/75/17 I had laying around.
-Engine oil, F/R diffs, PS, and coolant changes.
-New pitman arm

Waiting on an order from LMC to arrive with a grill and pass rear fender flare. Then I need to put the front end together, put the spare passenger door I have on, and get with my body guy to talk about painting everything that needs it.

Also have a set of 99 Tahoe leather seats I’m gonna get recovered and have heated elements added to because my uncle must have phucked the brackets to pieces these seats flop around so badly.

Nice to keep some things for sentimental reasons. A good old truck that can be used is one of them.

@dantheman1540,

Welcome back! It's cool to hear stories of family heirloom-type vehicles. The guy that's behind the Summit Racing username happens to have two of those. I have my late father's black '79 TA with the screaming chicken on the hood and his 2010 Chevy 2500 with the Duramax. He bought both new and was proud of them for their own reasons. The TA is a weekend cruiser and the 2500 makes for an awesome tow rig.

Well I’m half a bottle of moonshine in and I never drink so it’s a perfect time to update this thread. Trucks doing great, I got most of the damage fixed and swapped the rear axle out for one from a Hummer H2 out of my RCSB which has been mostly parted out. Does great burnouts and is nice to drive but I’m waiting on some Bilstein 5165s to come in before it gets put on DD status. I like the truck much more than I expected, the 5.7 is peppy, and 4l80 shifts very well, and the interior is kinda comfortable. I think I’ll enjoy this truck for awhile. Whenever I get out of this forced family vacation with in laws in the GA mountains I’ll post pics.
