Here's a thought ,
Instead of spending that large amount of cash on a new long lock,
Why not go buy a gas engine / trans and install it ,
Keep the Allison or sell it , then either keep the truck and drive it , or sell it and take the money you will make and save and buy a newer DURAMAX with less miles ? I wouldn't personally spend that much on a new long block to put in a truck with that many miles , plus who knows when the turbo or trans could go ?
It might nickle and dime you to death .
Just a thought bud.

Oh yeah, we considered a lot of different options Tim. Never considered swapping it to a gasser though. Wonder how that would affect resale? Nonetheless, I have a buddy here that owns a wrecking yard. He offered me a running 200K duramax with bad injectors for $1500. I could have slapped my injectors in it, bolted it into the truck, and been back on the road. If I wanted to sell the truck, that would be my best option.
Or to use that engine & keep the truck, I'd want to at least replace the head gaskets & water pump, and fix any leaks it may have. My injectors are still good, but starting to be "long cranking" on hot restarts. Balance rates good still, but I expected to replace them in a year or so. So if keeping the truck & installing the used engine, I might as well install new injectors at the same time. Now I'm up to around $4000, and have a 200K mile engine with no warranty.
My truck has 159K miles on it today. I have the truck set up just about exactly the way I want it. Auto-start, sound system, air bag system, spray-in bedliner, canopy, new shocks & ball joints last year, new CP3 from Oregon Performance Diesel last year, new tires a few months ago, CTS/EFI Live/backup camera, and a few other little items. The trans is an Allison reman, dealer installed under a GMPP warranty at 79K by the previous owner. I got the truck for a low price because it needed that CP3, and I own it outright. Add to that, the 2001-2002 HD trucks look the best IMO.
Looking at a new Duramax starts at $50K and goes to almost $70K. Used Duramax trucks with 60-90K miles are between $30-45K, and prices go up as mileage goes down. Anything used will undoubtedly need some cash spent on repairs & maintenance, plus any accessories I may want to add, to make it "mine". And having 5-7 years on monthly payments isn't too appealing either, even though the new(er) trucks seem pretty damn nice.
The wife & I have talked it out. We have considered many options. For us, right now, we feel we are making the right move. New engine & injectors, built by General Motors, with a nationwide 3 year/100K warranty. Time will tell if I am making a mistake...

I feel your pain, I just had to go up to Wyoming and put a new CP3 pump on my dads truck (03). He had just put new injectors and hard lines on and thought all was good till he got about 150 miles down the road and noticed oil pressure was dropping. Of course, he had the 37' 14K 5th wheel hooked up, loaded and heading home to OR.
He check it out and was making oil. After taking it all way back apart TWICE, he still couldn't find a leak and was desperate, so I drove up from TX to check it out. We still couldn't find a leak with dye in the fuel or anything, so the only thing left was the front seal on the CP3, even though the pump worked flawlessly, we decided to change it. It did after all have 245k miles on it,
. That seemed to fix it as he just made it home to OR.
Like you, he loves his truck, even though it has almost a 1/4 million miles on it!
That's why he just put $2200 of injectors and hard lines and $800 for a new CP3 pump on it.
BTW, That truck and trailer has made 2 trips up and down the Alcan hwy (I have a brother and uncle that live in AK) And just finish a 5 month 14K mile road trip ALL the way around the lower 48.
There is another Alcan trip scheduled for next summer too.

Roger,
No Doubt your making the right move. Like you said it's paid for and nothing wrong other wise. Those things still sell for around 15K with that kind of mileage too.
With a Gas engine you will cut the value in 1/2. Not to mention you need all the gasser specific stuff.
If only you could get it to make Oil like Kyle's Dad's truck. You would have a gold mine.

THIN, green oil that glows BRIGHT GREEN when you shine a black light on it!!! It's awesome!! wanna buy it???

I will have to say, it's the cleanest diesel engine I've ever seen, even before the fuel wash down,

Since the day he bought it, the oil is still transparent and not total back like normal diesels. Inside of the motor was spotless! lol He does change it every 3-5k miles though.

Come on Diesel guys usually go 10K on an oil change and they tell you it's normal for it to be black because it's a diesel....
