My 8.1
#11
I think I may try the 203 before I build another engine for it. I was curious if you guys have ever played with a cam in the 8.1 in the low 220's duration with any thing under a 114 lsa with about 4 degrees of advance? I had the comp 258 cam in it before I did the heads over I believe it was 206 212 on a 112lsa with .510 lift. The torque increase was pretty nice but ran out of steam around 4200. Just for conversations sake because like I said before you can't have your cake and eat it too, torque is going to be shifted with no change in displacement. I really wish you could put a 4.500" piston in a stock 8.1 block

We never offered cams on a 114 lobe separation with small duration because they don't produce enough power to warrant the amount of work to replace them. Reducing in lobe separation past 114 really starts to hurt the way automatic vehicles drive at low speed and makes for boats that pull when docked at idle. Surging and bucking can really ruin the fun of having a modified engine.
The factory 496HO cam is the best cheap and easy solution for stock applications looking for a lopey sound. On the other hand, a stock application with the BP-203 camshaft will have a hot rod sound, makes more power and drives nicer than the 496HO cam does.

I’m not generally a big fan of the earlier Avalanche’s with all the plastic side panels and generally like the later models more, but you have one slick looking truck. Not overly done, just a clean looking ride with tasteful mods.
