Factory duals Y'ed into a single 3"
#21
Finally got my 2500HD exhaust finished this weekend. My idea to run a 36" Walker diesel style muffler was a flop. It didnt knock down the rasp/drone at all. I ended up running two 16" straight through Magnaflow type (Actually called Bullet) mufflers in series.
It is actually quieter then the Magnaflow that I had on there that was dumped. Absolutely zero rasp and very very minimal in cab drone.
What came off (OEM 6.0L manifolds/dual piping/Magna dumped)......
What went on (Pacesetter and ORY to a single 3" all the way up over the axle and out the back).....

The factory duals arent really necessary on a truck making under 350HP either. So far my motor seems to be responding better to the non-catted single 3" anyway.
The dual muffs were keep the sound in check.

Maybe for an all out race truck, but this is a 300RWHP (maybe) daily driven truck.
My logic was that if the new 6.2L rated at 403HP at the crank does its business with 3.5" single tri-catted piping, then I can do what I need to do with just a single 3" non-catted system.
Made perfect sense to me and Justin (Blackbear)

i have a 2009 5.3 sierra obx long tube headers with 2.5 colectors and 2.5 ory into single 3" exhaust spliting after a magnaflow 36 " xl muffler
if i would do it agine id go with a 3.5" just to be ahead of what i need
thats my opinion

I think the gains/losses on this particular setup (cant speak for others) between 3 and 3.5" could only be measured in single digits on the dyno. Plus I think the smaller diameter of the 3" keeps the exh gas velocities up and helps out the lowend on my heavy *** truck.
Just so everybody knows too, the Pacesetter ORY is reduce from 3.5 down to 3" a couple of inches forward from where the intermediate pipe meets the ORY pipe. That said, a couple 45's and about 6 feet of straight and this setup could easily be upped to a 3.5" system. Of course I would need 2 new mufflers.
I'll try and get an interior and an exterior video made soon. It sounds really good though.
