i have an 03 same engine the LB7 all i have done is magnaflow 4" turbo back i get about 22mpg on the highway

if your looking at trucks with the LB7 engine before you buy have it taken to chev and have them check the balance rates on the injectors and have them look up the history to see if it has the upgraded injectors

blklime02 09-02-2010 06:36 PM

Is having the injectors upgraded a bad or good thing??

Dgrown 09-04-2010 11:43 AM

its a good thing the factory ones have issues with reliability but once that has been delt with though some exhaust on the LB7 motors and they are one of the nicest sounding motors there is it sounds like a big block on steroids

blklime02 09-04-2010 01:10 PM

Oh I see...verry good thing to look out for..thanks....but yea I'm the type of guy that a good exhaust sound is a must..but since thers not a lot of fixd up dmaxs around town...mostly cummins and fords... buddy of mine has a f250 with a4inch pipe strait from turbo all the way to the back tail pipe.I like the sound but would like something different..lol...I. always liked the truck with cowboy tail pipes..so how think it would sound with a 4in down pipe and all the way to the axal then split it to 2 2 1/2 then probly 4inch tips on each corner of the bed....

Also the heads on an lb7 have to come off to change the injectors. The first injs were crap, or so I have heard.

No, but the valve cover do and all the crap on top of them, lol. I helped a little with my dads a couple months ago (it's an 03). It's not a bad job, it books for 14-15 hours I think, but it took him about 40 cuz he's old and slow, and had never worked on a motor like that before. Guys who do them all the time can do it in about 8 hours.

The injectors he bought were $1800 for the set. The truck ran and drive fine, it had just smoked white a little when it idled is how he new it needed them. It had 2 replaced under warranty before he bought the truck at 111,000 miles and he was up to 177,000 when he decided to replace all of them for piece of mind since he was taking it on a trip to Alaska this summer.

As for MPG's, the truck has 4" Banks exhaust and a EFILive DSP5 tune I did for him and will get 19-22 on the highway and around 15-16 around town. He pulls a 37' 14,000lbs 5th wheel with it and get 10-12 pulling the trailer. He LOVES the truck!

Most get 20 mpg. If you pick up a Diesel Power Mag there's an article about a guy who gets 38mpg with some CNG injections system or something. He also won the Shootout this year. Truck made 1200/1800 to the wheels and got 38mpg or so...

Dgrown 09-05-2010 11:43 AM

i have 4 ince turbo back on my truck if i can make a video of the sound for ya

Thats got to be how much diesel he's using only, they're not figuring in how much CNG or propane or what ever else he's using as fuel supplement.

Spoolin 09-06-2010 07:24 AM

It is Kyle, they did the tests from one station, to another and see how much fuel it took to get the tank back to full. However there was a guy with a Cummins I believe it was that got 4x something mpg and he wasn't using an additional injection. I'll see if I can't find the article again.

05greendmax 09-08-2010 01:14 AM

I get any where from 18 to 20 mpg. And I beat my truck to death

I looked it up Kyle, the guy that got 45mpg was using a CNG assisted system while the guy who got 35mpg was using a low pressure nitrous system that he invented. They didn't say much about it but the guy stated it only activiates on grades and light throttle acceleration tp help the truck get moving. So really, that's kinda impressive since he's not using and additional fuel source to get his added mpg. Be interesting to find out more.

hot rod had that mustang with a d max swap running 9's and getting 38 mpg supposedly

That's kinda interesting... so he's using a little N2O to burn the fuel more completely under low load so the turbo doesn't have to spool and feed air to the motor. Still kind of an "adder" in a way.

Spoolin 09-09-2010 12:35 AM

No doubt it's and adder, just not a fuel adder!! :)
In truth/theory it just makes the combustion more efficient since he doesn't have to wait for the turbo to light off thus sparing himself the unbrunt fuel that would otherwise be necessary to get to that point. Although with the method he's doing, I wouldn't really think would be financially advantageous. Then again it depends on how much nitrous he uses and the cost of re-fills, how frequent, etc...
Kinda neat concept though.

blklime02 09-15-2010 01:58 AM

Well guys thanks for all the info...dam I sure wish I could of got that dmax I was going for..it got sold befor I got to it...still looking for one...but idk I think i found a gas hd...

venomhp 09-16-2010 06:55 AM

my 06 on 35's got 15 in city driving, 19-20 highway hand calculated, it was pretty amazing going from a half ton

jonathan734 09-16-2010 08:40 AM

Man I love my duramax to death, but the MPG thing always kind of gets me. I avg 15-18 over the whole tank. Ya I probably get 22 on the highway, but stop and go kills these things. Not to mention the price of diesel and maintenance. I still wouldn't get rid of it, but I wouldn't but one purely for the mileage. If you can afford a duramax, you'll love it. Just don't think you'll save any money owning a diesel over the gasser.

OMalley 09-22-2010 10:00 AM

I have tried the Diablo programer and just loaded the fuel economy EFI Live program listed on another forum. I can't seem to get much better than 16-17 hand calculated MPG. This is running 65-75 from top off to fill up recently. Around town I get around 12.5 to just under 14 around town driving. Mine is an 06 LBZ, with 33x13's crew cab with a cold air intake and 4" turbo back exhaust. I have absolutely NO idea how some of you guys are getting 20 plus MPG :bang:

What are the most reliable years? I need a truck for pulling in high altitude desert. What years are considered to be the best?

06 and 07 Classic are the most desirable. Most power, strongest engine and pre-emission. :)

How does this compare with the 5.9 Cummins?

I would take a Dmax over a Cummins any day, but I may be bias, With EFILive tuning, a Dmax even in stock form is AWESOME! :D

Well i'm looking to buy a diesel but it will remain totally stock and be used in high altitude desert application.

jonathan734 10-02-2010 10:43 PM

IF your going to leave it all stock, I like the duramax more than the cummins especially if you are wanting an automatic. If you want a handshaker I would go with the cummins. The dodge/cummins combo, in my opinion, rides rougher and doesn't seem as refined as the GM/duramax combo. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the diesels as long as you know what you are getting into. Obviously with the Ford/6.0 diesel, you need to know A LOT to keep them from having problems. Even then you will still probably get a few. Go drive them all and see which one you like best.
