A bigger turbo is definitely better and will clean up alot of the smoke once it spools.aftermaret turbos[but trans needed $3000-5000] are a bit pricey for the majority many are satisfied with just a tune[generic tune . Its alot in the tuning on a dmax.

Ya, a really fat tune can wash the cylinders, but some guys don't care, they love the smoke. A good fast diesel truck will have a nice gray to light gray cloud following it if it's properly tuned to make peek power for the turbo it has. Heavy black smoke is just a waste of fuel in most cases.

A little nitrous can clean up the black smoke too.

Black smoke is good for whoever is trying to keep up in the right lane, especially if their window is down.

one other thing to keep in mind is if it has black smoke at an idle (after the engine has warmed up) you should change or clean your air filter . when the air is retricted too much from that plugged air filter you will lose power & get worse fuel economy , that is from my own experience from running heavy equipment

haha.. when i had my 03 ford diesel.... if i had a rice burner with too much bass pull up... i would just stall up and floor it i could fill his car with smoke in a matter of seconds

at the time it was a combination of injectors that were a size too big, and a turbo that was a size too small
