Default 2003 1500hd as a performance platform.

So for whatever reason I have this bug up my *** to build a CCSB truck that runs low 13's high 12's.

Now my search for a decent platform has landed me a guy who is willing to trade me his MINT condition 2003 1500HD for my 2001 Mustang GT.

Truck has 230,000 kilometers on it but it runs good and he has even shown me some videos of it running and shown me the condition of the vehicle (Rust free frame) Owned by a older guy he has taken amazing care of this truck, no dents awesome platform.

The reason the 1500HD is obvious, 6.0 and 4L80E I understand the frame suspension and axles are all heavy duty which leads me to believe that the driveline in stock form should be up to the task of 1/4 mile launches.

I know many of you would think taking a perfectly good sports car and trading it for a tow vehicle makes no sense but. I am big man, I like sleepers and I think the ultimate sleeper in my city is a CCSB gas truck since everyone and their dog owns a lifted diesel with a programmer.

I want your thoughts and opinions on this. should I pull the trigger?

I vote yes.

Pick the type of FI you want and the world is your oyster. 12's can come surprisingly easy at that point.

I'm partial, but I love my Maggie. I love tighter converters and power under the pedal. Can't beat a PD blower for that.

For that goal I think its a good platform. Main things you get with it are the 14b axle, 80e trans, and 6.0. Stuff you would probably want eventually in a 1500 anyway. You are going to be a little heavier though, so you are going to want a little more power.

Exactly, if you wanted to retain ultimate sleeper status I would go turbo though. Most diesel guys seem to think your truck must be loud at idle to have power. A turbo would quiet your exhaust note especially at idle. Nothing against superchargers at all just looking at it from your sleeper angle. If you want to have real fun get a ladder rack for it with a 16ft. aluminum ladder!

Just a thought, has anyone changed their rear leafs to a lower spring rate (think half-ton springs) with air bags. Thinking the softer spring rate could give you some squat to help weight transfer while the air bags allow you to retain your hauling capabilities. The extra weight might not be worth it, not sure. I know in my truck there is absolutely nothing resembling squat and I can break a tire loose with very little power. Good luck!

Yea ive had blowers and turbos and my turbo setups were way louder than the blower even with huge mufflers. That "turbo will quiet down your exhaust" myth is a load of crap

I vote a 2.3L blower

Yea it was what I've experienced with turbo four cylinders, never had a turbo LS.

Exactly, idea of a sleeper being you get someone to race you that thinks they are way faster than you and then blow their doors off. By the time your on it the diesel boy is already thinking of how to explain to his girlfriend why he got whipped.

What you want to do is what I did. All my buddies have diesels but gas motors are just simpler and plain old sound better

But yeah same deal as you, 14 bolt and 4l80 and 6.0 is a great combo. All I did was put a transgo shift kit in and im never gonna worry about the drivetrain again really.

Im curious what its gonna take to get a CCSB into 12s, my trucks no drag truck but Id like to see what it would do

And even if its a loud gas truck nobody is gonna suspect a supercharger or turbo under the hood, I mean a cam lope could give something away but I could never quiet down a good cam lope

In an HD truck, running high 12s requires serious horsepower to move that kind of weight. To pull it off with 6 liters will require pretty substantial boost. Which means you'll probably want to pull the stock LQ4 pistons out and at the least put some LQ9 pistons in, not to mention throwing all sorts of other parts at the LQ4..

The other option is what Tierod did - a complete build on the big block 496 / 8.1L. Then its 12.8s all day long even in a long bed with a lift and big tires.
