Default Homemade Dyno

How does a dyno work exactly? I know it loads the tires in an attempt to simulate a real life pull, but does the breaking effect of the dyno need to be constant or does it need to be greater as the RPMS climb

What I was pondering is if you could use magnets and aluminum as a brake/resistance for a dyno. Seems like a dyno would be cheap that way. Just get a truck rear end with aluminum wheels and weld the spider gears and mount some industrial magnets close to them and would have the same effect. Are there any dyno's set up like that?

They actually have kits from what i was reading the other day with program, some little computer box and sensors for about $1000. I'm not about to build one. Just curious how it was all set up and if any of them used the eddy brake effects.

There are plans and such out there on how to build them.. The problem will be the software to control it and and gather/interpret data.
