Default wooden dowels to hold the lifters up

OK, I've read a couple different threads and my eyes are sore from all the crap you need to read through to get to the answer.

I was understanding that a couple 5/16 dowel would hold things in place. Today I tried it but the dowel can't compete with the weight of the pushrods. Most of them held their own but a few still fall. Next attempt

take 3/8 dowel and sand/file one side. I pressume this edge allows the dowel to be inserted and the edge will catch on the inside lip of the lifters, holding them up.

suggestions besides the $104 JPR tool?

You need to remove the rockers and pushrods. I have done it this way may times and never had a problem.

definitely remove the rockers and pushrods. I've used dowel like 4 or 5 times now with no issues.

I have the rockers off, but have the pushrods still there. 3 or 4 of the lifters fall with the weight on them. I would think the if the dowels were actually doing something the little weight of the pushrod couldn't push the lifters down. Notice the JPR tools have one side shaved.

Remove everything even the pushrods. Did you spin the cam a few times to push the lifters up. It shouldnt push on the dowels because there isnt anything to push them down on the dowels. Your doing something wrong if its bending the dowels. Make sure the rods slide in easy. You shouldnt have to force anything. Hundreds have done it this way. If you want get some 5/16 steel dowels.

I don't want to put anything steel in a blind oil passage. Also it now past 420, so I'll get back to it tommorrow. The dowels go in and they are a snug fit, but against what? Since this is an oil passage, I presume the one that feeds the lifters. So is the idea that the dowels fit between the very tender parts of the lifter bore serfaces?...when each lifter is in the correct position.

Edit: turns out these passages supply oil to the entire engine.

well the 5/16 wood did nothing to help my loose lifters. I even tried a 7/16 dowel shaved on one side but the buggers kept falling. Finally I found some pen magnets for a buck a piece at the dollar store. I would not recomend this method to any one with tired lifter trays. Anyway time to button it up and see if it will run.
