Default LQ4, LQ9, LM7, L59 difference

I do not know all the ins and outs of these blocks other than what I have read on a chart.
Pirate4x4.Com - The largest off roading and 4x4 website in the world.
that being said let me state what Im trying to accomplish.
I am going to have an engine built for my truck a 2001 GMC 1500. I want a strong engine and that starts with a good block that will remain that way after the bore. All I am looking for is the block or get an old wrecked piece of crap van or truck to get the engine and the 4L80E trans. That way I would have the yoke shaft and the drive shaft as well. Engine will be overhauled anyway and diff. heads so Im not looking to just swap engines. Buying a van or truck I would have a lot of parts that may be needed when doing this project.

Question:
1) Are all these engines cranks a 4 bolt? Or is it just the 6.0L? Or are the 2 bolts?

If there isnt any diff but bore and stroke between all 4 of these blocks, the 6.0's vs the 5.3's, then I can look at this a little different when purchasing a block meaning that would open up looking for a 5.3 which is a lot cheaper when any engine I buy will be machined to 3.9020 bore, which can change the way I am shopping for the 4L80E, shaft etc. I could purchase separate instead of looking for the entire vehicle with a 6.0L.

From this chart I see that I could possibly find an old Savanna van, 99-07, and get the LQ4 in a 6.0L or find an old truck 99-07 and get the LQ9 which is just a high output version of the same.

Question:
2) What difference is the "high output in the LQ9 compared to the LQ4?

Thanks in advance for any feed back.
Respectfully,
Ferrell Rooster

Difference between lq4 and lq9 is about 20 or 25 HP. Because the lq9 has 10 to 1 comp and floating pin rods. Lq4 has 9.4 to 1 compression with pressed pin rods. Lq4 have 4l80e s behind them lq9 usually has a 4l65 e behind it. All of the above said engines have 6 bolt mains and blocks are extremely strong. Lq4 s are a popular pick because they have the most cubes for the money lq9s usually bring a lot more money than a lq4. I bought lq4s for both of my projects and found 799 or 243 heads for even more compression than a lq9 and still cheaper than a lq9.

thanks for the feed back. that answered a lot. Like I said I was looking for the difference in them and you answered that. Compression and all wont matter since I will be gutting the thing but if I choose to buy a complete old engine to rebuild I can use the push rods which would make a difference in type parts to buy. This also gives me a better perspective in to what to look for to get the trans with the vehicle. being that the LQ4 comes with a 80 and the LQ9 which came in trucks came with a 65 from what you are saying. Just weird that a 6.0/LQ9 in a 3/4 ton HD would have a 4L65e trans. I would figure they would have had a 400 or 80e in them. But then again that is why I am asking the questions because I dont know exactly.
Also, and correct me if Im reading this wrong, you said all 4 ARE 4 bold mains? the 6.0 LQ4, 6.0 LQ9, 5.3 LM7, and the 5.3 L59?
if they are all the same but the the bore and stroke other than the pin rods, It may not make much diff than price when choosing a block to machine.
Thanks again for your time.

A 5.3L has a 3.780 bore. Some blocks can be bored to 5.7L spec. Its recommend sonic checking it though.
A 6.0L has a 4.000 bore.
Stroke is 3.622 on both engines

The Piston's are the main difference. LQ9 uses a flat top piston and LQ4 has an -8cc dish in it. There is also a minor difference in cam specs. Between those 2 and the tuning parameters is were you see the difference.

Thanks in advance for any feed back.

Answered above in red.

The press pin was used prior to 2005. After 2005 all LS engines used floating pin rods and pistons. Some vehicles like the LQ9 equipped truck line received them in mid 03 as a 2nd revision. In 04 vehicles like the GTO with the 5.7L LS1 recieved them as a 2nd revision as well as the Corvettes before swapping to the LS2 engine in 2005.

thanks for the info. I am on a budgit like everyone else that starts out. I will see were it takes me, But I am going to try my luck with a 5.3 block. The 6.0 no matter what they come out of, are really high $$$. Which leaves me no room for the other things I will need. Yes I have just about come to a bottom line on the money and it all is working out so far. Its that dang block that is killing me. I mean a 5.3 I can pick up for about 350. A 6.0 over a grand. So that extra $500 or so is the difference in me getting the intake. Anyway....thanks again guys

I picked up a LQ4 with 140,000 for $400. Thought I was getting an awesome deal until I had to rebuild the whole thing. If I could go back and do it all over again I would get a low mile LQ9 ($1200 76,000 is what I found) Put cam and heads on it and call it a day.
