Default 6l starter overrun

I have an 03 GMC 6L. Generally when truck is cold the starter will keep turning the motor over even when I back the key off of start to run, the engine won't start until I turn the key to off. Then on the next try she will fire right up. On occasion the 2nd try the truck will start in a hesitant manor as if starving for fuel.

They way you described the problem it could be 3 separate things; the starter solenoid, the ignition switch, or the fuel pump.

Do you just mean you have to crank several times before it starts? If so I think the fuel pump is most suspect.

Sounds like 2 separate issues. The starter sticks because the solenoid is hanging up. Don't mess with it...put a starter in it. The excessive cranking is probably fuel pressure related. On my truck it was a bad pump. It could be a fuel pressure regulator failing as well. We have 2 of these trucks and they both needed a fuel pump at about 100k. A pain to do but not that expensive. I would pull or tilt the bed instead of dropping the tank.

Good luck and let us know what you come up with for a fix.

Had a couple of truck do this including mine. If you turn the key to (start) and bring it back to (run) real quick, the starter will keep spinning until the motor starts. Yes the second half maybe fuel pressure. Most of the ones i had do that end up replacing the fuel pump. Fix the fuel issue first and the first problem should go away.

im also going to agree and say fuel issue...

I bought a 01 2500HD and the PO said he put a new pump and sending unit in a month before... So i drove it and got sick of it never starting on the first crank so i checked the FPR and pump pressure. the pressure would slowly build to 35psi and stop (while cranking) then it would start, shut the truck off and it would fall right back down.

i pulled the pump and installed a new Carter pump and sending unit voila starts like brand new! ( just because its new doesnt mean its good)
after i ran the numbers i found the pump the guy put in was a $40 unit from amazon
Goodluck
