New transmission was installed by dealer, mechanic test drove it and found the rearend making noise. The theory is the spider gear(s) broke (open carrier) locked the rearend up for a split second while moving at 30 mph and wasted the tranny. It seems to take any question whether I abused or neglected maintainance on the transmission and throw it out the window. Now the question is what caused the spider gears to break...ABUSE, wouldn't think so. I run the truck through the paces when I can but I rarely ever did burn outs with the damn thing. Any ideas or reasons this would happen?
Need to cover my *** at the dealer to HOPEFULLY get GM to pay more or for the whole thing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

 

Why don't you pull the differential cover off and see if you are right?

 

My truck is up at the dealer still. Tomorrow I will talk to the service manager to see what can be done. I don't want them to pull the cover until I know if who going to fix it them or myself, out of warranty by 7K miles-GM is splitting the tranny and install cost with me. May have to limp it home if they don't pay to fix the rear.

 

I've blown a couple of sets of spider gears back in my younger days. Once from spinning my tire on a rain slick highway for several hundred feet. The gears don't like it very much when one tire is spinning at 100+ mph and the other is just rolling along and all of a sudden the spinning tire grips dry pavement. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

The other time was probably from playing around in 4x4-Low range, trying to pull the front wheels off the ground, which believe it or not is possible to do in a 1981 K5 Blazer. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Dealer called Friday morning and informed me they will pay to fix the rearend, WHOOWHOO! I guess I better buy my next new vehicle from them.
Just a fyi, don't know think other delaers would be this generous. They know, I didn't even buy the truck (or my wife's LT-1 caprice) from them, I bought the truck from a used car lot-which was against better judgement. I used to work for one of the service writters and my wife has done some posters and service sheets for the service department. But I do know the owner has made it clear to the service manager to keep on top and try to have one of the best Chevy service departments in the area.
