Id venture to say with some handloads and someone who can actually shoot(not myself ) that could get even better. I believe if nothing else Nonnie has proven that you dont need expensive glass with some of the crap hes done. Of course I believe hes a better marksman than 99.99% of the people out there as well as being well versed in reloading. Which is why I asked if he was going to be reloading as that seems to be the most important aspect of precision shooting.

Youre not the only one with an opinion that could be right, ease up on the other guys.

Oh Im not saying its not a good round, just out of the other ones to be considered I wouldnt go with it. Its like having a cammed and big converter setup versus a radix truck, they both turn about the same numbers but one does it easier.

Id really like to build a true tack driver but I believe a cheap, fun AR build will be first along with getting a couple more XD pistols and finally a mid-grade 1911. I was all set to order an AR kit and it didnt tell me til the last step they were out of stock.
That is very true. You know, they say that a properly set up AR will give a high dollar bolt rifle a run for its money. However, if I were to choose a caliber for the sole purpose of 1k shooting, I would most likely go with either a 260rem, 6.5-284, or a 7mm remington. The only reasons being that they all have decently low recoil, Good ballistics, and easy to reload.

The cartridge selection is rather a mute point as I can think of easily over to dozen that would be great out to 1200. The 338LM is way more cartridge than one would ever need unless they are stepping out to a mile and beyond.

There are some great out of the box rifles out there, but MOA or just barely under MOA is not what I'm after when shooting and loading. I strive for a combination that will give me consistant .5 MOA or better performance as long as I can shoot that well on that given day.

savages are nice out of the box, but lack in several areas when considering precision same thing with remington. Overall Remington is my choice over a savage simply because the aftermarket support and the resale value. If I build a remington I know if I want to sell it in the future I wont lose my *** on it.

Caliber selection in no particular order

6.5x47 Lapua
243
260
284
308
7mm-08
7 WSM
300 WM
300 WSM

and so on and so on

I tend to stay away from the RUM because brass selection is limited and barrel life sucks.

I do know of a few nice custom rifles out there for sale, but that all depends on budget.

I will say this...

minimum will be 3K to get you into a rifle that you use at this range (optics included)
No love for the 6.5x55? I just got into F-class last year and it preformed great the few times I shot out that far.

Oh plenty of love for it.... just too many cartridges that are capable of performing the task to even list all of them..LOL

Thats why I added the "so on and so" because the list now days is just so over whelming

Reload, good glass (Sightron's are damn good for the money), a Savage Stevens 200 makes an excellent rifle to start with. As far as calibers go your various .30s and 6.5's are at the top of the heap and are proven performers in there many many forms.

My honest recommendation, start with a .223 with a fast twist out to about 600 to get technique down. When you get that perfected and bored of it, re-barrel and move on out

havent made any progress at all. still want a long rifle , still want a big bore.

i have since gone away from the 338 lm and instead going with the big boy , nope not 416 but 50 dtc. i dont know why i just want a big ol boy.

im sure some of you know the round and its history but it basically shares everything with the 50 bmg but the case is shortened , and the shoulder is moved and angles changed but ballistically are the same.

they have quite a few really nice 50 dtc rifles but havent picked which one i want yet. id like to see an ar-50 made in this caliber but time will tell. right now i really like the ferret 50 .

i couldnt afford to shoot that thing.. my 300wm is plenty enough for what i do with a long range rifle.
im still working on my 5.56 AR long range load.. maybe one day.

well its in jail and im currently researching scopes but have narrowed down the choice to a nightforce or vortex razor .

this is what it will be going on

ill still be adding one more in the future , either in 300wm or 308 for plinking . not sure what yet but something that will be great out of the box and not break the bank .
