To a degree I'll agree with you. The 300wm is superior ballistically to the 30-06. However, the decline of the precision 30-06 came from the 308win. The issue at hand is precision. If it were all about sheer ballistics, then the 7STW or 6.5-284 smokes all three. I think it's just been a minute since anyone came out with an 06 designed for precision and range in mind.

Oh yes sir, I certainly have heard of the NRA targets being shrunk for the 308win. I'm with the crowd of "With modern powders and components, the 30-06 is again a match for the 308win". Seriously though, back then the precision powder for the '06 was 4895. I'm not knocking that particular powder as it still prints great groups in most rifles. However, a mid-range load of H4350, RL-19, and H4831 seems to print groups just as well without as much drop or drift. Granted if you're feeling froggy, and have adequate barrel length, a stiff dose of RL-22 topped with a 190gr HPBT seems to reach out and grab peoples attention. Of course though, I'd rather have precision and accuracy than speed any day. If I really want speed and any given time, I could just forgo the 300wm and jump to my RUM, but I'm rather attached to my shoulder as of late.
