I'm not talking about the clutches being locked. I mean the outer casing of the stall physically getting larger in size and pushing the crank forward until it trashes the thrust bearings and then causes the engine to lock up. I've seen it happen before, but generally it's caused by high horsepower applications.f

I think you can check for a balooned converter by just pulling off the dust cover and looking up in there with a flash light. I've never had one do that to me personally, but I've heard of it happening before and have seen it as well.
Another thing would be to pull the oil pan and check for bearing material. If it took out the thrust bearings, then you'd have a lot of bearing material in your oil.

Or drain the oil into a good container and filter it with a coffee filter.. check for foreign matter.. and cut open the oil filter..

Trans shouldn't be over 200... "operating temp." is 160-200
