Default Oil Pressure Gauge Pegged Out! WTF?!?!?

On my way home tonight, I noticed that my OP gauge was very high. It was up to about 80. When I stopped at a light, it started climbing and went all the way to full peg and stopped there. I have seen OP gauges drop before, but never peg out like this. This is my DD so obviously I'm pretty concerned. What does this mean?

Here is a pic I took of the gauge:

Could be a bad gauge or sender.

what he said, i'd lean towards the pressure sender first.

God, I hope that's all it is. Is there anything else that could cause the oil pressure to go up that high?

Default My gas gauge buried itself like that.

And couple of good finger flicks straightened it out!

^Ha, really, wow! Good ol GM electrical system. Wouldn't it throw a code if it had a bad OP sending unit or not necessarily?

it should tell you if the pressure goes low but not high.

check the sending unit first , its behind the intake manifold , you have to remove the IM to have accses to the sensor .

if the seesnor is ok , check the gauge, if its also OK.

I think it would be the pressure control spring in the oil pump , if so, change the oil pump with a new one for the L99 Camaro

I think it's just the gauge cause when I turn the key to the "on" position without actually starting it, if the sending unit were bad, the needle is supposed to fluctuate back and forth. Another reason I think it's the gauge itself is that it pegged all the way out, past 80 psi. If it were something with the pump or sending unit, it wouldn't go that high. The final reason that I think it's the gauge is because it now just sticks in certain spots for long periods and never moves. I have never actually had to repair gauges themselves before, and while I'm certainly not a GM newbie, this is my first truck since my '95 2 door Tahoe years ago and that was totally different. I'm having to learn all these new little electrical quirks that are similar, yet different than all the f-bodies I've had.

That's a bad stepper motor without a doubt. A faulty sensor can't make it read that high.
