How are you guys passing an inpection?

I am running a COS with my rear O2's disabled, and I haven't been able to pass an inspection. I even put in converters so I wouldn't run into this problem.

The part that really pisses me off is that my tuner started tuning in August, so it hasn't been able to pass since. My inspection ran out in October, and I park it for the winter anyways. Well he had all winter to mess with it, and next thing you know, spring was here. My reg ran out in March, and wonderful New York State won't let you register a vehicle unless it is inspected, and it won't pass. Is there a way around this?

CalEditor@PCMCalibrators 07-02-2011 03:43 PM

Do they just plug into the ODB port?

Gadgetized 07-02-2011 04:10 PM

Yes, they just plug in. There are no codes, but nothing is resetting. I am getting a catalyst monitor, evap system monitor, oxygen sensor monitor, and oxygen sensor heater monitor. They will allow one to fail, but not four.

I understand your issue then. I am not sure why it wasn't set as passed test by your tuner

00ChevyScott 07-02-2011 10:15 PM

It's definitely a tuning issue.

Everything my tuner has done has me scratching my head from the beginning. Part of me wants to still give him a chance, but at this rate it won't be done for a couple more months. I would think a tuner could get something tuned in a couple of months without a problem. I wish there was someone in my area that could tune it. I might hit up Wheatley for a tune, but part of me wants to give him the chance to finish it. It is just frustrating.

00ChevyScott 07-02-2011 11:06 PM

Here is how easy it is.

if it is that easy how come my nelson tune will not pass?

No idea. I've never had an issue. Well other than the obvious fact that you can smell and hear that I don't have cats.

terravast4 07-02-2011 11:29 PM

not reported causes you to fail

AKlowriderZ71 07-03-2011 12:00 AM

Nelson uses HPTuners(unless something has changed). Using HPT, he may have just un-clicked the "SES enable" box. The DTC will still set, but the light will not come on.

Not sure if that's what you're dealing with, would have to look at your tune file to better answer.

00ChevyScott 07-03-2011 12:07 AM

I wouldn't imagine a Veteran tuner such as Nelson would be making that mistake. There's always a chance he might have missed it on this particular tune, but it's pretty standard stuff for people with LT's and no cats.

AKlowriderZ71 07-03-2011 12:11 AM

I agree, but we're all human. Everybody makes mistakes.

terravast4 07-03-2011 11:28 AM

It will not pass readiness

00ChevyScott 07-03-2011 11:36 AM

Well I'm also in Texas and have the same type of inspection, never had a problem. And neither have anyone else I know in this area that have tunes.

terravast4 07-03-2011 11:39 AM

evap, o2 heater and o2 sensor will not go into readiness...fail.

ARE YOU EVEN READING MY POSTS :bang::bang::bang:

Terravast4, How are you able to pass to drive your vehicle? I just want to be able to drive this legally, I dont care how I get a sticker on it. I am going to try everything like Scott posted.

Gregory 07-03-2011 12:57 PM

Like 00ChevyScott showed, disable the reporting of the sensors. This eliminates the throwing of fault codes. Then, set your tune to run E85. Since it smells different and is much cleaner, there will not be the same unleaded fuel smell you noted. If there is no tail pipe emission test, then you should be okay. Can I assume you have gutted catalytic converters? It is illegal to disable emission settings and devices, so perhaps Nelson is being careful. It is difficult to say.

Gadgetized 07-03-2011 01:12 PM

I actually have high flow cats. I am not running rear O2's though. The person doing my inspection just cares about when he plugs it in. Every vehicle I own is completely safe to be operating on the highway, and I am not worried that he would fail me for anything like a smell. When I use EFI Live there are no DTC codes, but if i run a cheap handheld scanner on it, the lights that are on will apparently not let it pass an inspection. I will grab a pic in a bit of it.

Gadgetized 07-03-2011 01:23 PM

There are 4 lights flashing. The guy that is doing my inspection said it won't pass with more than one of these flashing. Obviously the 4 lights that are not lit in the first pic are the ones that are not flashing.

I am running high flow cats and am not throwing any codes. my set up is 100% legal

terravast4 07-03-2011 01:43 PM

I am running a SD tune if that makes any difference

I had to prostitute my little sister in Mexico to get a sticker.

LOL
I don't think so.

1SlowHoe 07-03-2011 02:33 PM

What about O2 sims? Then you can leave the report SES enabled but it wont set because the PCM is seeing the correct voltage. That's one blinking light gone.

CalEditor@PCMCalibrators 07-03-2011 03:12 PM

When I set up the off road PCM's the IM status for all of the IM Test Show completed & passed test when the PCM is on the bench even before its on the car

These are the codes that need to run and pass to get each of the individual monitors to run.
I setup a tune specific to let my truck pass inspection. My O2s are bad and I haven't worked in 10 months and its a second vehicle. By setting these codes to 3-No Error Reported and Uncheck the SES-Enable box, they instantly pass when the ignition is turned on. This is in HPTuners. I'm not sure how this is done in EFI-Live.

Do you run this tune for inspection only?

bullygoat 07-03-2011 05:23 PM

Yes I run it just for inspection because other than the O2s being bad, it normally passes all of the monitors.

Some custom operating systems will never run the proper tests to pass the monitors. When I ran a 1-bar tune in my '04 GTO, it wouldn't pass any of the monitors because the maf needs to be disabled and the maf passing is a prerequisite for most of the codes to run and pass.

terravast4 07-03-2011 06:03 PM

well, my maf is disabled for the SD tune and I am o5 could this be an issue?

bullygoat 07-03-2011 06:08 PM

It depends on how your state does inspections. If they plug in to check monitors, it's possible you won't pass.

terravast4 07-03-2011 06:17 PM

that is the problem....i am throwing no codes but they are plugging in and can see something is up...since it wont show ready

bullygoat 07-03-2011 06:31 PM

Did you do your own tune or did you have someone do it for you?

terravast4 07-03-2011 11:56 PM

nelson tune.....
