HID Problems
okay so i have a 99 gmc sierra 5.3. i have Hid bulbs, but i cant figure out why when i start my truck my passenger side light does not always come on. i normally just have to turn my truck off and start it again and they will both come one.
ive seen many different people saying different ways to fix them but i thought i would ask for my self. so can anybody tell me what i need to fix this or how i can fix this? |
You need a harness so that it gets enough power on initial start up. I had this same issue with my 2000. I would just flash my highs and the 2nd one would start up. Since I've installed the harness, I haven't had a single issue with it.

The harness is a possible issue, especially on the older trucks. The ground wire gets corroded and the connector gets corroded. However, if you are able to light the bulb, it's probably not a wiring issue. Also, as long as you don't have really old style Super Digital ballasts, power draw on startup is fairly minimal- a little less than a 55W halogen bulb. (The Super Digital ballasts consumed 75-90W due to horrible circuitry and quality)
The DDM harness will work for your needs if you don't want to wire one up yourself and you think it's a power issue. Depending on the age of the kit, you may simply need a new ballast. If this started after a year or so, then I'd lean toward needing a new bulb and ballast for that side. The DDM ballasts only cost about $11 to produce, so I imagine a spare ballast from them isn't too expensive. |
upgrade to digital ballast

Sounds like a ballast issue to me. My buddy Kyle has always had a similar issue with his HIDs on his 99 Sierra but he's got some old clunky looking ballasts on his. Turning them off then back on always makes it light up though. I got my 55w HIDs from DDM tuning and have them all wired separate from the stock harness using my own relay harness integrated into a second underhood fuse block just like the original. Got my fan harness and relays integrated in there too. It took a lot of time but its pretty sweet and my trucks light harness only serves as a means to turn the relays on and off. No issues with the HIDs not lighting here.

Mine has done the same thing a few times lately... just turning them on with the knob has fixed it...
Thanks for the high beam advice, makes perfect sense and would save a couple seconds. |
