Cam in a stock 5.3???

I was thinking about putting a z06 cam in my 06 2wd. I Will only have minor mods cold air kit exhaust and a tuner. Do you think this will benifit me? Im not looking to race it but have a nice kick in the pants. I do tow with this truck also.

hey, im gonna have the same mod in the next few weeks here installed. I have everything minus the exhaust as of now. I am also looking at doing a Tb stall in the near future as well. I ordered a 03 z06 cam, springs and pushrods of ebay. I hope this is what i want, i would like to go turbo one day, and figured this was a good place to start. Everyone seems to like the improvements over the stock cam to the z06 cam, so hopefully all is well

Yall make sure that you have the rear gearing to support the cam. I'm going to do the 4.10's on the back side first.

I only have the 3.73 rear. You think it really needs a set of 4:10s How much does the ZO6 cam kill the bottom end power?

lady3bglover Mar 12, 2008 11:41 PM

you should be fine with the 3.73's. I'm running with 20's, that's another reason why I'm going with the 4.10's

also get an actuall tune not the handheld stuff, you will never get what you want or need out of one of those

+1 you'll need a rael tune and a trailblazer tq or something similar to really get the benifit.

Thanks for the info guys. Do you think the cam will to much? Or should I get a custom ground cam?

mcfarlnd Mar 14, 2008 07:00 AM

custom grinds are great as long as you know exactly what you want. patrick g can spec out a cam for you if you wanted to go that route. i had him spec me one out but, i came across a good deal on a gt-1 cam and decided i would try a couple differerent cams out before i spent too much money something that i wouldnt like. as for the zo6 cam i havent personally installed one nor rode in a truck with one but, i do hear from alot of people that it does kill the bottom end.

I just installed a z06 cam 2 weeks ago. I love it. I had a custom tune done last weekend. It is a must, the truck idled very rough. I'm running a stock converter and 3.73 gears. When I stomp on it at a dead stop with out using the breaks it lights em up no problem. I don't feel like I gained much down low but after 4,000 rpm it really comes alive.
