Why am I having such a hard time finding an inch pounds torque wrench

I'm looking for a 3/8" drive click type torque wrench (dont want the beam, that will be a pain in the ass trying to read that thing at all sorts of weird angles in the engine bay). I need the wrench to read down to at least 40 inch pounds. A lot of the ones I see on ebay go from 120 to 960, which is no good to me. I'm also looking for something reasonably priced, around $30. If anyone has any links/leads please let me know.

I don't think I have ever used a inch lb wrench. I always go by judgment, so far so good...

ft-lb = in-lb / 12
in-lb = ft-lb x 12

this is rather cheap but here ya go!!

i got a brand new snap on if ya wanna make me an offer, lol i got 2 of them ;)

The TB and intake manifold all have specific torque specs. I want this done right; I imagine if the bolts are torqued identically there will be an imbalance and the intake can leak. I'd also probably end up overtorquing the bolts.

skeet 07-06-2009 06:12 PM

just realized it reads 120 to 960 sorry about that, i'll check mine and see what it reads

Hey Skeet,

I saw that link on ebay already....it goes from 120 to 960. Torque spec on the intake manifold calls for 44 inch pounds first pass and 89 inch pounds second pass. What the specs on the snap ons?

skeet 07-06-2009 06:15 PM

gimme few, gonna go check now!

skeet 07-06-2009 06:31 PM

my bad, its 1/4" drive, i dont think snap on makes a 3/8s tw that will start at 40 "lbs, but mine does start at 40 " lbs, how soon do you need it? reason i ask i am gonna need it this weekend, i dont mind letting you borrow it for the cost of shipping, my other tw is 3/8s and starts at 120

00ChevyScott 07-06-2009 07:34 PM

That was to GMCtrk. 40 inch lbs is nothing. Just tighten them hand tight in sequence, and then go back and retighten. Like mangled said, its not hard to do by hand.

i got one, one side is metric and the other is standard, 3/8 drive.
got it from a tool sale going on in town, they have a web address i have to hunt
for the card.

Y'all can do it how you want.

I'm doing it to GM specifications so that I dont have to do it again, or worry that it sets up incorrectly.

Skeet, thanks for checking, but I'll just go ahead and keep looking for one to buy. I'd like to have it for the future.

just snug them up, none of that needs to be super specific or tight

Silverado53 07-07-2009 12:06 AM

Have you checked Sears? They have a 3/8 inch-pound wrench that reads from 50-250 if a remember correctly, I own one and it works great. I got it for around $60. Just set it at 50 and you'll be fine. 6 inch pounds won't matter and it'll be closer than any other way unless you wanna spend big $.

just use the elbow torque wrench and youll be fine. snug it down and give it an extra 1/4 turn.

Why 3/8 drive? Most inch # tq wrenches Ive seen/have are 1/4 drive. Or you can get a digital tq wrench like Ive got and it converts with a button :D

PappyDan 07-07-2009 01:18 AM

your on your own, cannot find the card.

boosted_blue 07-07-2009 11:47 AM

i bought one like your looking for @ sears last week. Its a Craftsman, cost me $75. I also bought a 1/2 inch drive ft lb wrench for the same price. Both are nice and work great.

KySilverado 07-07-2009 12:15 PM

Sears has a Craftsman brand clicker in 3/8 drive. I use it all the time. I've also seen cheepo's at Autozone and the like. For the really small stuff (rear pinion rotation force etc...) I found a small 1/4" drive beam style. It's so cute :)

all the cheaper 3/8" style inch lbs start at ~120

andrew383 07-07-2009 02:03 PM

michael just go to sears and buy the damn thing :D

GMCtrk 07-07-2009 03:03 PM

Hey thanks for the link. I WENT to Sears and they didn't have the stupid thing! As for 3/8" drive, nearly all my sockets are either 3/8" or 1/2", I've got some random 1/4" sockets, but I can't be certain they'd fit the bolts I'd be working on. $80 is a TAD more than I was wanting to spend though.

andrew383 07-07-2009 04:13 PM

its cheaper than replacing cracked intake gaskets and doing it twice..... :)
you buy it,use it 1 time and ill buy it from you for $80 shipped :D

chevyrado14 07-07-2009 07:38 PM

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=2696

get that and use an adapter for your 3/8 sockets

GMCtrk 07-07-2009 08:22 PM

Woah... I like that! Thanks a ton!

chevyrado14 07-07-2009 08:24 PM

no problem

Tootall 07-08-2009 06:09 AM

about the only thing on the truck that you'll need an inch lbs torque wrench is for the trans, and the rear end . . . other than that, just snug them up, it's not rocket science
