Great thread! I have had a lot of electric and Nitro vehicles over the years.
I have been out of the fun for awhile. Was into the electrics pretty well up into 2003-2005. Back then they didn't have these lipo batteries that are more powerful now. Only had the NICD or NIMH batteries back then lol. Guys back then were running some of the 30inch long deep vee boats with 10 cell C battery packs. They just started making the brushless electric motors around that time 2004 I believe, but they were expensive back then. One of these type boats is on youtube from years back doing 90 or 100mph on the water. Some of the boats has two 10 cell battery packs lol.
I have a boat still in storage and 1 nitro rustler that runs and 1 other parts nitro rustler.
Might look into these small boats as they are cheap as hell compared to back in the day.
*edit*
This is the same boat I have in my storage building. The graupner offshore phantom boat. I might decide to make it go fast again lol. It's not small though.

LOL that sucks. You know what they do on the nitro rc boats / trucks right? Find a large sized party balloon and fit your ESC inside of it then you can keep it water tight by putting a plastic zip tie over the end. No water or very little should get in.
