Holy shit, 409 stainless on a header? Why didnt they just cheap skate it all the way and make them from mild steel
|
That was probably done to keep the cost down. They headers are coated through.
|
For $1400 MSRP, they sure arent doing a good job of keeping the cost down. Not to jack your thread, but building a header from 409 is something an EBay company might do..
|
Our price for this package will be $1259.99.
The headers will be coated Inside and Out Full 3" O.D. Downpipes 3" I.D./O.D. Metallic Substrate CATS Equipped with 304 SS Flex Joint |
409 wow time to post about this on the owners site and let people know about this. thanks tcharged for bringing that up.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with 409 stainless steel and its usage as a great long-lasting header. It doesn't have the 'luster' of 304L, but when its coated, who cares?

500MPa vs. 450MPa. Negligible and indifferent when it comes to header applications - since when are we ever pulling on our headers with such force that tensile strength becomes an issue?
By those same rights, 304 has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than 409, meaning 409 will be less stressful on welded primary-tubes to the manifold-flange. ('course, good header mfgrs know that they have to let 304 expand, and thus make the welds in the appropriate locations & allow for this expansion at the manifold-flange). BTW, while my 304L SS LTs on my Firehawk were uncoated - because I too agree that coating for corrosion resistance on 304 is downright silly - I do have my 304L SS LTs for the TBSS coated...for heat-insulation. |
Dont forget, alot of the exhaust system is being held up and in place by the headers. That the #1 reason for header failure, is fatigue. Either from shotty craftsmanship or poor hanger location or exhaust rigidity
