What tires to get??

Welll I have snoooped around here for awhile but haven't made a whole lot of posts. I got my exhaust done on the truck and still saving up for more stuff. Building a drag car definitly eats at your budget haha.

Anyway, i have a 2002 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 Crew Cab Short bed. I think that is all that is needed to know. I am looking for some new tires. It is the stock 8 lug wheel that everyone loves. It is my DD so nothing too obnoxious but i do off road and want something sexy. I also want something to help raise her up a little. It is stock besides exhaust, i want to do the torsion key thing to but still learning about it. I was lookin at the Nitto Terra Grapplers in 285/75/16 but wasn't sure they'd fit. Anyway all advise is appreciated. Thanks for reading!!!

Id have a level kit installed first then get the bigger tires. That way you know how much clearance you have. Im running 295/70R17 (33.3") Nitto Trail Grapplers on my tortion lifted 98 yukon. Even then i did some bumper trimming to get it to clear.

I highly recommend the Trail Grapplers. They do hum, but very little not obnoxious at all and off-road they work great!! Ive tested mine :D

What kind of tire do you want and mud or all terrain??

Well it is a DD so i'd like something that has somewhat good tread life. Tire noise is iffy. Not something extremely loud but my exhaust is loud so will mellow out most of it. I dont need a full blown muddin tire but an all terain or low grade mudder would work.

As for the leveling kit. For the 2500HD's i know you can level them out yourself just by the torsion keys on there. It says it's good for about a 2" lift. Would that be enough?? Money is kinda low right now for all this. I was gonna do that leveling and then look to fit. Also what biggest size tire i could wrap around these small stock wheels??

That Nitto Trail Grappler M/T is great, you wont regret buying it. Looks nice and aggressive and it doesnt buzz much. Your exhaust will over power the sound (if any) the tires make.

Like I said, get it leveled out first then you can see how much clearance you have after the lift.

Dont go too big on the stock wheel, the issue is that your stock wheel might not be wide enough to support wider than 285mm tire causing it do "donut" around the rim causing excess ware on the middle of the tire.

Thats what happened when I bought my yukon. The previous owner had 305/70 on the stock 16" rim which was pretty narrow. When I was on the expressway and hit a bump, the yukon would sway. The tire needed a wider wheel for the 305 width of the tire.
285/75R16 = 32.8" height
I think it should clear it after a tortion twist.... What size is the tire your running right now?

I love the aggressive look and will love on the trails i'm sure. Hope it's not gonna be worse parkin the beach haha. The tires on there are from the previous owner, they are underrated tires (fill up to 35 psi) can't support the weight. That's why i need to change, they are barely holding on.

I will be doing the tortion twist this weekend as long as i feel comfortable doing it, i've read up and doesn't seem too hard. Yeah that's what i was worried bout fitment in fender as well as on rim. Would a 285/75/16 fit on stock rim or would 265 be biggest i could fit?? Also don't want it sticking out too far....

check the inside of the door. it should tell you what size tire was originally put on and size of the wheel including height and width

i'll have to check after work later today. Discount tire direct says it comes with a 245/75/16. I think it's a 16/6.5 rim or something like that.

blackjack325 07-20-2010 09:22 AM

ah man, thats way too narrow if its 16x6.5"
get yourself some 17x8, you can get a set for under $450, they arent very expensive

00T/AWS6 07-20-2010 09:42 AM

I'm pretty sure that's what it is. That's why i was wonderin about it. I thought the 285/75/16's might be pushing it on that small of a rim. It says minimum size on their website is 7 but then again i've seen people push it without a problem.

Even the 265/70/16 terra grapplers say 7-9" rim's. I figure one of them should work right??
