Default Pulling TT with 2018 Suburban without tow package.

Ideally I wanted the factory tow package but to make a long story short I couldn’t pass up the deal they were giving me on this one without the package. The family is expanding beyond what my Sierra half ton will hold and we like to go camping during the summer so I will be trading my 5th wheel off on a TT as well within the next year. I’ve been looking at 22-23’ TTs around 4000 lbs dry with GVWR around the 6000 lb max towing capacity of the Suburban.

My first question is what are some of the best value for money modifications I could do to the Suburban to give me a little more comfort/safety when towing? My research shows me the added features of the tow package are a brake controller, 3.42 gears over the 3.08, air suspension and the 2 speed transfer case (for dinghy towing I guess?). The brake controller and air suspension are easy enough to add but the 3.08 gears definitely aren’t ideal as I have 4.10s (4 speed tranny mind you) in my half ton. In addition to some of the simpler aforementioned upgrades would it be worth it to throw some taller gears in there, or would just a decent tune give me some better pulling performance? Any other recommendations, or would you not even bother given I’m not hauling THAT much?

Second question. I used to be a heavy haul trucker in a former life so I have experience hauling but I have never hauled anything substantial with a ball. Any advice setting up a weight distribution and anti sway system for the first time to make it go a little smoother. Thanks for all your insight and bearing with my post.

The weight you are towing isn't that bad with the gears you have, ideally the 3.42's would be better with the 6 speed auto. Unless yours is an 8 speed. Either way the 3.42's are better but the 3.08's with that much weight won't make you hate your life that much.

What hitch/anti sway stuff are you using? Most of the big name brand stuff do offer some advise on settings some of that stuff up.

I went with a Curt hitch and a Curt Weight distribution setup. What will it weigh loaded up is the real question??? You could be into 2500 territory there

Yeah I’m running the 6 speed. I don’t have a hitch yet as I haven’t purchased the TT yet or even sold my 5th wheel for that matter. Just trying to plan ahead, thanks for your insight.
