What is the best way to clean the engine and what to use

I just purchased a 2004 Silverado LT with a 6.0L engine. The engine is dusty and could use some detailing to make it look like rest of the truck. I am wondering what others have used to clean their engines? Simple Green and water of? Any issue with using water in the engine compartment? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

just about anything will work, i usually take mine to the car wash just across the street pop the hood and spray away..

Carefull if the motor still has the foam dealio's under the intake manifold, they trap water and could let them drain into the knock sensor holes if they have never been done before. Typically when they are done a bead of RTV is put around the suction cup seal to stop water from getting in.

But otherwise, purple power/simple greeen work great. Soap and hydro foamer hose attachment are awesome too, then just scrub away with whatever and you'll have a clean motor.

HOT HOT water helps alot too.

The main key is to never let it get too dirty so its easy to clean. I used Adams detail spray and VRT on the black rubber parts.

I usually use Adam's All Purpose Cleaner and dress with In And Out Spray (it's aerosol so it gets all the nooks and crannies). I mist the engine with a hose. Spray the APC on a COLD engine, scrub spots that are really bad and use a fan pattern to spray it off. Let it dry (you can start the engine to speed this up) and then spray In And Out Spray on all the bare plastic, no wiping needed.

When it comes to cleaning the engine, i usually wash it with a mix of all purpose cleaner and water (just a mild soap and water solution basically), then i brush it thoroughly especially on the dirtiest and greasiest parts. When I hose it i make sure no soap suds are left. I wipe it dry all the way, and that's abt it.
