Featured Truck

We finally got this thing rolling. I hope you all enjoy! Thanks to Scream for an awesome write up and for Ryan23Silverado for hosting the pics. Featured rides are chosen at random by myself, Scream, and Ryan23Silverado. Now, onto February 2005's featured LS1tech truck.

Step A Side
creederado’s 1999 Chevrolet Silverado Stepside

Every once in a while you’ll run across a truck that demands respect. Sometimes you’ll see one at a car show, with wild graphics and a slammed-to-the-weeds stance. You might even see one at the track stopping the clocks with some impressive numbers. It’s very rare to find a truck that could excel in either arena, but James’ 1999 Silverado “Step A Side” could just as easily take a trophy at your local car show as it could at the drag strip!

James started by special ordering a base model Silverado in January of 1999. Not content with the stock appearance, he combed the aftermarket as well as GM’s parts bins to create a unique style. An LT full length center console and 2002 Escalade gauges were added to the interior to spruce it up a bit.

Black was the color of choice for the outside, covering the Street Scene Speed Grille inserts, the grille shell, bowtie, and Street Scene SS-style bumper cap. The trucks menacing stare is topped of with a 2500HD hood. The exterior door handles are paint-matched Silverado SS pieces. A Precision roll pan and shaved tailgate smooth out the rear end.

Throwing all of the parts in the world at a truck won’t help if the stance isn’t right. James chose a mild 2/4 Hotchkis drop to compliment the 18” Boyd Coddington Timeless wheels. Up front, 295/45 Nitto 555 tires handle steering duty, while 305/45 Nitto 555R drag radials provide the much needed bite. SSBC slotted rotors are stopped by powdercoated stock calipers. An Earl’s 5-line stainless steel brake line kit helps those components work even better.

A nice looking truck will get you some respect on a street, but timeslips get you respect at the track. The 5.3L mill was treated to a Comp Cams 212/218 0.557/0.562 114+4 bumpstick; Comp’s valvesprings and titanium retainers were added along with a set of hardened pushrods. A UPD cold air intake feeds air to the motor, while Arizona Speed and Marine headers send the spent exhaust gases through a B&B Triflow exhaust. Allen Nelson of Nelson Performance worked his magic on an ’02 PCM, providing a performance tune to make all of the upgrades work in concert.

Turning all that horsepower into ET requires a drivetrain that can put up to some abuse. The built 4L60-E transmission takes every bit of torque multiplication that the Yank Truck Thruster 3000 converter can throw at it, and sends all the power back to the 10-bolt rear end that’s been stuffed full of an Eaton posi unit and 4.10 gears.

Any truck that can turn the quarter mile in 13.59 seconds at 98.7mph AND look great while doing it deserves all the respect it can get. Otherwise, you can Step A Side.
