Color Matched front end?????
What are you guys using to get the paint to stick to your chrome front ends?
I have the front bumper wrapped with vinyl but I want to get it painted. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.per...2c338f5cdf.jpg |

The bumper needs to be sand blasted before painting.

What else have people used? what chemicals, primers, paint? It just seems paint will chip easily and show the chrome.
Even the factory painted front ends chip like hell. If u want to keep it looking good, add a 3m clear bra over it. Seems to work really well! |
The shop that painted all of my plastics used an etching primer
|
I posted about this on pt.net facebook page since this site doesn't get much action anymore. There was a good amount of info posted there.
I was lucky with my bumper because I was able to pressure wash all of the chrome off. From what I see, people use a an adhesion promoter, sandable primer, primer sealer, base, and then clear. Some have even had good results with Duplicolor rattle cans.... |
If money is not a problem let a reputable shop do the prep and paint work. In this way you can be sure of the outcome and exact color.

painting a chrome bumper is pretty hard, you'll need to really rough up all the chrome if not remove it all, then sand smooth the metal then use an etching primer sand some more then primer then paint then clear.
|
Chrome bumper painting is really a work for a prominent shop to do.
|
As stated above....I was able to get all of the chrome off with a pressure washer.....
|
Your best bet is to wrap it. Other than that rough up the chrome and an adhesion promoter.

I don't recommend doing it, after I did my grill, but I used a torch to bubble the chrome and then flake off after that. I say that because I got a few spots to hot and melted the plastic behind it. I took my time with it but it still melted in a few spots, not bad a little body work and it was fine. Also it took Forevvvvvvver to flake the remaining chrome off. Just a suggestion..

why not just dip everything thats what i did looks great and been on there a year now tho the snow and summer here in colorado.

I'm wondering how good chip guard would work. Transtar makes it in an aerosol.
