rust-o-leum sucks, i use that for my frames and its terrible, even when i spray bomb it
id say for something older it would be good just to get some paint on but like i said of used this stuff tons of times on my junk adn it NEVER turned out that nice even wen i did do prep work... take it as you will though

That's an interesting read. I have used that kind of paint on my old stock cars, looks good from a few feet, but it does doesn't respond to wax well and does fad over time. It would be good if your painting your beater, to make it look better.

I have done it.
A friend of mine had a project prelude. He got hit by an old lady and insurance cut him a check, he spent the majority of the money doing an H22a RHD conversion, so we had about 500 bucks left to fix the hood, fender, and bumpers.
We ended up going with a cheap Ebay body kit for the bumpers, because the entire body kit was cheaper than the OEM front bumper.. we bought a hood/fender at the junkyard, and he ordered some projectors.
Once we fit the body kit on, we sanded the entire car... took 5 of us about a week to get it to where we wanted, because we also molded the body kit onto the car and shaved the license plate and door handles.. haha once we had finished it looked really good.. but he didnt have enough left over for the paint job.
So we bought the mineral spirits and rust-o-leum and got to work. The trick is in the coats.
When you mix the paint thinner with the paint in buckets and apply it to the vehicle, it goes on almost like water. so you cover it the best you can, let it dry.. then wet sand it. We ended up doing almost 15 coats.. took us about two weeks.
It was suprisingly a very decent paint job. For 50 bucks, you couldnt have spent the money better. You have to be willing to work, and work hard. But the out come can be par with a rookie painter and a cheap gun.
It has actually held up really well too. He has had it done for about a year, and its still good enough he hasnt felt the need to have the car professionally painted.

And it beats spray bombing it how? I think if you spend enough time sanding you could paint a car with a brush and get a mirror finish eventually. I wouldnt want to wet sand a car 6 or 8 times during painting....time is kind of money ya know.....

This is only an option if money isn't there... We are college students with alotta time, and didnt have a need for the car because we all have primary vehicles.
If you have the supplies to paint the car, a paint job will only cost you 300 dollars or so in supplies, which is affordable by most peoples budget. We didnt have the supplies, or 300 at the time though, so this was the only option.
Time is def. money, but we had time and didnt have money. haha I was just giving you the inputyou gys asked for. I did do it, and it does work.. but it does not work well...at all.
