New 408 blown build

Hey guys I am new on here been checking out the site for a few years now. I am open to any suggestions on this thing. I already have most of my parts here and am just about to have this thing finished. A buddy talked me into putting this on here. I have a 86 chevy full size pickup. I am building a 408 ls motor and putting a 4.0 litre whipple on it. I have a 10 rib dedicated blower belt setup. I am running the a1000 pump and filter kit and ID1000 injectors. The bottom end is a complete callies setup. Weisco pistons with tool steel wrist pins. 10.2:1 comp. I am running a set of slightly modded 243 heads. Cam is a 239/246 .623/.615 on a 114 lsa with all matching springs. Running a turbo 400 and a 12 bolt behind it. Hoping this thing does fairly decent. If yall feel I have left anything out, like I said I am open to suggestions on what else I need to get. I will be running a huge heat exchanger for the intercooler and also a meth kit after I get it in and running. I have a set of 1 3/4 long tubes on it as well. Thanks for looking.

ltr450ryder 03-30-2013 02:36 PM

I would say get a set of 1 7/8 heads at least for that and that's going to be a sick a** 408 when it's done. And have any pics of the truck?

UnVmy5.3 03-30-2013 02:42 PM

Welcome. Pics or never happened

shannons86 03-30-2013 06:44 PM

I was trying to find a bigger set to fit the truck but didn't have any luck. I will get pics posted as soon as I get to my computer(and I figure out how)lol.

Should be a fun build. Make sure you get some pics up. When do you hope to get it running?

I really hope to have it done by the middle to the end of this month. Depends on work I have been covered up so, gotta make the money before I play. Here are a couple pics of the truck and the whipple and one of the 408. I got the truck as my 12 b-day present and this year I will have owned it for 20 years.

Nice choice on the blower. Those Whipples are beastly.

Phantom 04-02-2013 11:33 AM

That truck is badass

T/A KID 04-02-2013 11:00 PM

Shannon is one of my good buddies, this thing is going to be insane.

shannons86 04-04-2013 08:22 PM

lol Thanks T/A KID btw just an update. Whipple called me and told me that the blower is made wrong. So they sent me a call tag last week and I took it to a local fedex dealer to have it shipped back. 3 days there, they said they would have it back out to me same day. 3 days back should have recieved it back today. I called and they told me that they never recieved it. I called the fedex place and they told me "well we didnt have a box big enough so we had to order one and it took a week and a half to come in" so it just left here today and now I am down another 1.5-2 weeks waiting on this thing to come back. Now just stuck with not much else left untill I get it back.

53bowtie 04-05-2013 10:51 PM

That stinks about the shipping but at least it was "we haven't shipped it yet" instead of "we lost it". Build is going to be awesome though! Can't wait to see the finished product! Where in NE Arkansas are you located?? I graduated from UofA, moved down here for a job.

Atomic 04-05-2013 10:56 PM

I would never trust fedex or ups to pack a supercharger.

shannons86 04-10-2013 09:48 PM

Well got some good news today. Whipple will be shipped back tomorrow. Also kept trying to find a tb to work with the crusher inlet. Well I have been trying to find a ford tb that would work. Well low and behold the copo Camaro tb is what I will be using. It runs the same inlet. So should have some more pics up next week sometime. Got harness on order be a couple more weeks before I get it.

Well got the motor set in this weekend. Hope to have it all ready to go by the time the harness gets here.

03sierraslt 04-22-2013 07:44 PM

That should be a fun setup.

black00chev 04-22-2013 08:05 PM

Damn you must have read my mind on this. Been thinking something like his would be cool ever since the copos were announced to come with a 4.0l blower.

shannons86 05-11-2013 12:57 AM

Been a while since an update but it's done. Taking it to the track tomorrow to see how it does. This is a video as of Monday nite. Pulley setup only makes about 3-4 lbs boost. Kind of went overkill on this build. Can't seem to hold it on the road in high gear as of now. Suspension next. 408 ls 4.0 whipple first fire up. - YouTube

oakley6575 05-11-2013 01:32 AM

Man, that 4.0L whipple is going to be fun as hell. Post up some more vids when you get the tune straitened out.

shannons86 05-12-2013 07:19 PM

Well got the tune finished. Took it to an event yesterday. Ran very well major traction issues. Second pass about half track something happened to #5 cyl. Did a compression check this morning all are about 175psi number 5 is down to 155. Going to tear down and see what happened. As of now only thing I can think is maybe the intake o-ring might have failed. Wideband was on that bank and it was running high 10's to low 11's afr. Timing was only 14-15* wot. Had what we think to be a very safe and conservative tune in it. Well know more later. Will post links to vids shortly.

oakley6575 05-12-2013 07:47 PM

Any vids of it running yesterday?

Ya really, that track looks....Whats the word...... Interesting..

oakley6575 05-12-2013 08:16 PM

The yellow side rails look like they could take some serious impact. :D

shannons86 05-12-2013 08:39 PM

Yea defiantly not my first choice on strips around our area but most of them were closed due to Mother's Day.

shannons86 05-29-2013 11:33 PM

Well just thought Iwould give an update. I am a complete retard. I tore the motor down and didnt find a single thing wrong. I had an issue with my crankcase ventilation system. Anyhow got it fixed and will be going to the track this saturday. New slicks on the way. Little overkill for my truck. Anyhow here is a video of it idling as of now. Hope to have some decent track vids after this weekend.

WICK3DxGATA 05-30-2013 12:13 AM

if you dont mind me asking where did you order your crank, rods, and pistons from for the 408? im starting to think i would like to build one with the 6.0 i have.

oakley6575 05-30-2013 01:25 AM

That thing sounds so awesome. What was the reason for the low compression in cylinder 5?

FWIW, I ordered my rotating assembly from Texas Speed

shannons86 05-30-2013 10:39 AM

Man I wish I knew. I had my machinist down here while I was tearing apart. The only thing we could see on that one is the rings didnt seem to seat completly. Dont know why. I drove it most of last week and re did a comp test and it has come up to where the rest of them are.

Razor 10-25-2014 05:49 PM

Bump.

Any updates on the truck?

mitchellmade 10-25-2014 07:31 PM
