just curious build thread
This may be a little slower than most other builds on here but you got to start somewhere!
got some quotes back from texas speed and going to get a few more to see who i truly trust to have along the way. Plans: 600hp daily driver and possibility for 800 later if i get a newer daily. Vehicle: 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab.. heavy yes.. family can all be in also yes.. and i get to drive something fun. Current Engine: 5.3L non flex fuel engine Future Engine: LQ4 or LQ9.. since theres not a ton of differences will probably go for the cheaper LQ4 and do fully forged internals. would really just like to build another engine with my dad Current Trans: 6L80e i dont see this as a problem even at 800 or 900 as long as im not at the strip every weekend.. it will be more like twice a year if that. Future Trans: may have to go to a 4L80? dont know that this truck will ever need if but speed/power is an addiction so just thinking ahead Current Rear: 10 bolt with 4.10 gears Future rear: not really sure... 14bolt FF with 4.10s? currently running 34s and dont plan on bigger ever.. maybe even stepping back down to 33s I'm undecided on how much i will replace considering the engine has 100k on it currently but i was hoping to be able to throw in the cam and what not with new gaskets/seals needed get it tuned and be on my way. Which begs the question should i go ahead and do the 6.0 build but the funds are not there for that yet and i want lopey truck now ha! First quote for: 1-7/8" headers and off road y pipe DOD delete kit Cam: stage 3 truck high lift cam 216/220, .600/.600, 114 LSA, 112 ICL Polished .660 dual valve spring kit - 160lb at 1.8", 415 lb at 1.15", CB at 1.015" 7.40 chromoly push rods still doing some homework before buying but feel free to drop question, comments, recommendations or concerns at any time! I will get a picture up at some point today if i get another break to do so. |
Lq4 & 9 are gen 3 motors 24x reluctor ring if you want to go to 6.0 need to look for a ly6 or l76 truck version |
interesting, i will check that out as honestly don't know what you are talking about ha

The lq engines (gen3) use a 24 tooth wheel on the crank (no distributor) and the cam sensor is behind the intake they use a 3 bolt cam gear now 04 to early 07 still the nbs used gen 4 rods and floating pistons better and stronger but still a gen 3 motor and the computer is for gen 3 from 99 to early 07 the late 07-up nnbs trucks and SUV are gen 4 completely cam sensor is in front on timing cover they use a single bolt cam gear which u can change to a 3 bolt when the cam is changed just stronger also the reluctor wheel one the crank of the gen 4 is a 58x (58 teeth) and the computer is made to talk to the 58x like your truck has. It's not impossible to put a gen3 in a nnbs truck you would have to change the wheel to a 24 tooth etc they make a converter box to make a gen4 58x work with a gen3 24x computer but don't think they make one for the opposite anyway it would be more trouble and money than its worth.if you find a ly6 (iron block) or a l76 (aluminum block) they will drop right in will need tuning this is the easiest if you want a 6.0 |
Also either gen4 motor I mentioned has the better heads they have square intake ports vs cathedral they are called l92 heads same as the ls3 engine comes with |
Not sure where you live but you may can find a l92 which is a 6.2l from a 07-up Escalade or Denali the ones I have seen are still pricey that’s why I suggested the two 6.0’s they will be cheaper depending on miles and how complete it comes |
i appreciate it.. i will start looking for one of the ones you mentioned just to get an idea. I am in north eastern arkansas area.

In something that weighs 5,500lbs or more depending on passengers, the transmission holding 500-600hp with a really good transmission tune shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Holding 800-900hp without issue is doubtful in something this heavy. Likely would need to be built just to do that. A camaro/ctsv/caprice that drop 1200-1400lbs off your curb weight all stand a better chance at holding larger power numbers. |
Another Gen IV engine option would be the 6.0 Cast Iron Block, LY6 or L96 Casting Number 12576181.
You're looking at long tubes and y-pipe. Are you planning on supercharging it? |
Yes I do plan on supercharging it, I’m just having a hard time deciding if it will be on the 5.3 block or if I will try to get a 6.0 or 6.2.. more I read more I think I should just stick with 5.3 engine.. if I go bigger it’s like a disease (that I know I have) that I’ll eventually want more and more |
No reason not to supercharge the 5.3.
Find a Gen IV 6 or 6.2 block and build it with your dad on the side and when the time is right, drop it in. |
Totally agree hopefully that will all work out okay

What type of blower are you looking at? |
A positive displacement style, 2.3L twin screw whipple more than likely. I will probably run it at the 5psi mark.. I think that’s what they normally run at but then later once it gets tuned and what not I may look into some smaller pulleys and a 6-8 rib belt been reading a good amount of threads here. So much knowledge to take in at once. Only ever built a few cbr600f4i engines and a couple atv/utv engines |

Yeah just about every thread i have read thus far recommends pinning the crank if i plan to do any more than "stock" pulley sizes, so that is something else to look into lol. i still have a ton to learn about boosted application but with everyone's help on here i should get there fairly quick, it also does not hurt my feelings if you tell me something i already know. Confirmation is good information!

Well carnage has taken place.. check this video out pay attention to the top center spider gear. Acting like it wants to rotate and wobble.. tried to tell it that its not earth.. anyway.
And here is a tooth from the pinion.. Attachment 154139 so on the way is an eaton truetrac and 4.56s. I had 3.42s then went to 4.11s because of the 33.8" tire. Been told not to fear the gear plus its not much more gear so it cant hurt. I thought about getting on here and posting to ask if that's too much gear when I do supercharge it in the future but realistically im looking at 2 years until the wife is done with graduate school.. so whatever ill change it again if I have too. |
